3 make initial court appearances linked to federal drug charges

YOUNGSTOWN -- Three people were in U.S. District Court Thursday afternoon after being arrested one day earlier on federal drug charges.
Michael M. Hazlett, 48, and Sandra L. Hazlett, 51, both of Twichell Road, Andover, and Roger R. Shaffer, 26, of State Street, Struthers, all are charged with conspiring to attempt to possess marijuana with intent to distribute it.
Federal drug agents arrested them Wednesday night in a vehicle at Interstate Route 80 and state Routes 7/62 in Hubbard Township.
They made an initial appearance Thursday before Magistrate George J. Limbert. A bond and detention hearing will be at 1 p.m. Monday, also before Magistrate Limbert.
Informant
According to court documents, a confidential informant working for federal agents made arrangements to sell some 300 pounds of marijuana to Shaffer and Michael Hazlett. Sandra Hazlett arrived during the meeting, carrying money for the drugs, court papers say.
Agents seized $256,000 during the arrest.
