SOCCER Howland silences Salem 4-0 in MAC



Austintown Fitch and Boardman registered Federal League wins.
HOWLAND -- Lucas Martorana scored three goals as the Howland High boys soccer team blanked Salem 4-0 in a Metro Athletic Conference match Tuesday.
Mike Maiorano also scored for the Tigers (7-2-2, 5-1-1).
Salem goalie Andrew Loudon stopped 10 shots.
Poland 1, Niles 0
POLAND -- The Bulldogs posted their seventh win of the season by beating Niles.
Senior forward Ken Toth converted a penalty kick with 8:56 remaining to give Poland (7-3, 5-2 MAC) its game-winning goal. Niles had fouled Tom Rudnicki in the penalty box.
The Poland defense, led by goalie John Alden and defenders Matt Downie, Isaac Yurco and Michael Gett, finished off the team's fourth shutout of the season.
Poland out-shot Niles 14-5 and had five corner kicks.
Canfield 2, Alliance 1
ALLIANCE -- Senior Mark Beezy scored an unassisted goal, while senior Dave Piersante scored on an assist from senior Brent Hunsicker for the Cardinals' goals.
Freshman keeper Drew Turocy had seven saves.
Fitch 3, Lake 0
AUSTINTOWN -- Anthony Colaluca scored two goals for the Falcons, while Dustin Cramer got the other.
Justin Finlen and Cramer each had an assist for the Falcons (2-7-4).
Fitch had 19 shots on goal, compared to eight for Lake (0-11-1). Pat Passewitz, goalie, had eight saves for the Falcons.
Boardman 1, Canton GlenOak 0
BOARDMAN -- Boardman shut out GlenOak for its third Federal League victory of the season.
Bob Davis scored the only goal off a Brian Katz throw-in with 6:55 left in the game.
Senior Bill Davis along with juniors Nick Ludman and Enrique Urrutia anchored Boardman's defense. Goalie Mark Lipinsky shut down the Eagles with seven saves.
West Branch 3, Northwest 2
BELOIT -- Robbie Kocher scored twice and Joe Starkey added another goal for the Warriors (8-2-1).
Shane Young had nine saves in goal for West Branch.
Maplewood 7, Bloomfield 0
NORTH BLOOMFIELD -- Brian Hivick scored three goals and Ronaldo Smith added two more for the Rockets (7-2-1).
Jeremy Mohorick and Matt Wilson also scored for Maplewood. Bloomfield is 4-5-1.
Girls
WARREN -- Kelli Willis scored two goals, her 11th and 12th of the season, as Cardinal Mooney turned back Warren Harding 3-0.
Nomiki Frangopoulos also scored for Mooney (4-3-1, 2-0 Steel Valley Conference).
Warren Harding is 2-6-1, 0-2.
Frangopoulos, Colleen Zajac and Marisa Simon had assists.
The Cardinals led in shots (27-1) as well as corners (4-1).
Cardinal goalkeeper Natalie Humphrey recorded her second shutout of the season.
Newton Falls 2, Ursuline 1
STRUTHERS -- With the match knotted at 1-all, Adrianna Gaia scored in the final three minutes for the Tigers (5-4-2).
Mary Jo Spletzer scored to give Newton Falls a 1-0 lead at the half.
Senior Katie Frank scored for the Irish (4-5-1).
Hubbard 1, Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary 0
AKRON -- Midway through the second half, Rachel Crafton scored from about 25 yards out for the Eagles (5-6).
Hubbard took 10 shots and the Irish (6-3-2) shot 11 times.
Champion 5, Girard 0
CHAMPION -- Brittany Skeels and Alyssa Boggess each scored twice for the Flashes (7-6, 5-1 Trumbull Athletic Conference).
Jenna Lee also had a goal as Champion took a 2-0 lead at the half.
