Purse: $3.5 million. Winner's share: $630,000.
Television: ESPN (Thursday-Saturday, 4-6 p.m.; Sunday, 3-6 p.m.).
Last year: Loren Roberts won his eighth tour title at age 47, beating Fred Couples, Fred Funk and Garrett Willis by three strokes.
Last week: J.L. Lewis won the 84 Lumber Classic, closing with a course-record 10-under 62 for a two-stroke victory over Frank Lickliter, Stuart Appleby and Tim Petrovic. Lewis, 43, is the third straight 40-and-over winner and ninth this year.
Notes: Players 40-and-over have won 13 of the first 40 events this year. Kenny Perry and Vijay Singh are three-time winners, Craig Stadler won the B.C. Open at 50, Peter Jacobsen took the Greater Hartford Open at 49, and Couples, Kirk Triplett, Bob Tway and Scott Hoch also have victories. ... Justin Leonard, the 2001 and 2002 winner, is taking the week off following the birth of daughter Reese. ... Mike Souchak won the 1955 event at Brackenridge Park at 27-under 257, the second-lowest total in tour history. ... The World Golf Championships' American Express Championship is next week at the Capital City Club in Woodstock, Ga.

Safeway Classic
Schedule: Friday-Sunday.
Course: Columbia Edgewater Country Club (6,318 yards, par 72), Portland, Ore.
Purse: $1.2 million. Winner's share: $180,000.
Television: The Golf Channel (Friday, 8-10:30 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 3:30-5:30 a.m., 8-10:30 p.m.; Monday, 4-6 a.m.).
Last year: Annika Sorenstam won her third straight event and the eighth of 11 2002 tour titles, beating Kate Golden by a stroke.
Last event: Europe won the Solheim Cup in the biggest blowout in the history of the event, beating the United States 17 1/2-10 1/2 on Sept. 14 at Barseback in Sweden.
Notes: Sorenstam has four victories this year to push her career total to 46. ... Michelle Wie is making her sixth LPGA Tour appearance of the year. The 13-year-old Hawaiian missed the cut last week in the Nationwide Tour's Boise Open, shooting 78-76. ... Australia's Karrie Webb won the John Q. Hammons Hotels Classic by nine strokes two week ago in Tulsa, Okla., her first tour title in more than a year and the 29th of her career. ... The Longs Drugs Challenge is next week in Lincoln, Calif.
CHAMPIONS TOUR
Greater Hickory Classic
Schedule: Friday-Sunday.
Course: Rock Barn Golf and Spa (6,926 yards, par 72), Conover, N.C.
Purse: $1.5 million. Winner's share: $225,000.
Television: The Golf Channel (Friday-Saturday, 1:30-4 p.m., 11 p.m.-1 a.m.; Sunday, 1:30-4 p.m.; Monday, midnight-2 a.m.).
Last year: Inaugural tournament.
Last week: D.A. Weibring won the SAS Championship for his first Champions Tour title, beating Tom Kite and Bobby Wadkins by a stroke. Kite closed with a career-low 61.
Notes: Bruce Lietzke leads the money list with $1,562,036, followed by Tom Watson ($1,534,608) and Gil Morgan ($1,394,023). ... The tour is off next week. The Turtle Bay Championship is Oct. 10-12 in Hawaii.
PGA EUROPEAN TOUR

Courses: St. Andrews (Scotland), Old Course (7,115 yards, par 72), Carnoustie, Championship Course (7,112 yards, par 72) and Kingsbarns Golf Links (7,059 yards, par 72).
Purse: $4.85 million. Winner's share: $809,100.
Television: The Golf Channel (Thursday-Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; Sunday, 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.).
Last year: Ireland's Padraig Harrington beat Argentina's Eduardo Romero with a birdie on the second hole of a playoff.
Last week: South Korea's K.J. Choi won the German Masters, making two eagles in a closing 67 for a two-stroke victory over Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez. Choi had a 26-under 262 total.
Notes: Ernie Els tops the field along with Vijay Singh, Darren Clarke, Colin Montgomerie, Nick Price and PGA champion Shaun Micheel. Singh is coming off a victory two weeks ago in John Deere Classic, his third PGA Tour victory of the year. He leads the PGA Tour money list with $5,702,507. ... Scotland's Paul Lawrie won the inaugural event in 2001. ... The final round will be played at on the Old Course.
NATIONWIDE TOUR
Mark Christopher Charity Classic

Course: Empire Lakes Golf Course (7,017 yards, par 71), Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.
Purse: $450,000. Winner's share: $81,000.
Television: The Golf Channel (Thursday, 5-7:30 p.m.; Friday-Sunday, 1:30-3:30 a.m., 5-7:30 p.m.; Monday, 2-4 a.m.).
Last year: Monday qualifier Andy Miller, the son of former PGA Tour star Johnny Miller, won on the first hole of a playoff with Dave Stockton Jr., John Restino and Doug Garwood.
Last week: Roger Tambellini won the Boise Open for his first Nationwide Tour title, beating Tripp Isenhour and Charles Warren by six strokes. Tambellini earned $108,000 to jump from 72nd to 18th on the money list with $157,143.
Notes: Zach Johnson leads the money list with $414,955, followed by Joe Ogilvie with $359,512. The top 20 at the end of the season will earn 2004 PGA Tour cards. ... The tour will remain in California next week for the Monterey Peninsula Classic.
