COLUMBUS -- Youngstown State's record fell to 1-7 with a 7-0 loss to nationally-ranked Ohio State Sunday.
The Buckeyes (6-0-1) were led by Jackie Lafond, who scored two goals and an assist.
The Buckeyes outshot the Penguins 30-1 and outcornered YSU 12-0. Goalkeepers Mia Railing and Caitlin Bestard combined for nine saves for YSU, which visits Detroit Sept. 28.

Pietrantoniowins by decision
CLEVELAND -- A wild right to the body in the middle of round one almost spelled defeat for Anthony Pietrantonio in his second pro fight.
The shot took something out of Pietrantonio in the middleweight bout at Gray's Armory Friday night, but he went on to a unanimous decision victory over Gonzalee Jones (0-2).
He sent Jones, of Akron, to a standing-eight count in the third round.
Pietrantonio suffered a broken rib from that opening-round shot and will be out of action for about a month.

Phantoms lose 4-3
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Youngstown Phantoms Junior-A hockey club dropped a 4-3 decision to the USA 17-and-Under National Team in an overtime shootout Saturday night.
Under North American Hockey League rules, Youngstown received one point in the standings for the regulation tie.
Carson Strang, Jared Katz and Aaron Rhyner scored goals for Youngstown.

* VIENNA -- Brent McLaughlin scored for Mathews (2-6-2) and freshman Matt Wilson answered for Maplewood (6-2-1) in the second half as the teams played to a 1-1 tie in boys soccer Saturday.
Mathews had 15 shots on goal, compared to 20 for the Rockets.
Freshman Brett Ford had 14 saves for Mathews. Dustin Slusher had six saves for Maplewood.
* BELOIT -- Cory Criss scored two goals and Adam Harris one as West Branch defeated Lakeview 3-2.
John Wallace had an assist for the Warriors (7-2-1).
Jeremy Mink scored both goals for the Bulldogs (6-4-1).
The Warriors had 23 shots on goal, compared to 15 for the Bulldogs.
West Branch goalkeeper Shane Young had nine saves, as did Alex Koltsov of Lakeview.
* BELOIT -- Anita Beegle, Paige Stryfeller, McKenzie Wallace and Cassie Snoddy each scored goals for West Branch (7-0-3) in a 4-1 win over Lakeview in girls soccer.
Sarah Arbuckle scored for the Bulldogs.

Hornish wins IRL race
FONTANA, Calif. -- Sam Hornish Jr. won the fastest open-wheel race in history Sunday at California Speedway.
The two-time defending series champion passed Scott Dixon to take the lead 15 laps from the end of the Toyota Indy 400.
Hornish's Chevrolet-powered Dallara averaged 207.151 mph -- breaking the previous closed course race record of 197.995, set here last year by Jimmy Vasser in a CART Champ Car event.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- Chris Byrd won an unanimous decision over Fres Oquendo to retain his IBF heavyweight title Saturday night.

U.S. remainsin top tier
BRATISLAVA, Slovakia -- U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick kept the United States in the top tier of the Davis Cup on Sunday, beating Karol Beck of Slovakia 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
His clay-court victory clinched the best-of-5 World Group playoff, assuring the United States a place among the top 16 teams next season for the Davis Cup.
Australia will face Spain in the final of the 2003 competition, with the match set for Australia on Nov. 28-30.
Australia beat Switzerland 3-2 in one semifinal and Spain beat Argentina 3-2 in the other.
