WARDROBES Buyer offers hints on getting the hang of organizing closets
WASHINGTON POST
Every closet should have a wardrobe of proper hangers, according to Brooke Newton, the Container Store's closet buyer, who is responsible for stocking more than 150 hanger types, from gripper designs to hold slippery fabrics to inflatables for drip drying.
Newton knows her hangers, so we asked her for a few do's and don'ts to keep in mind when we make our fall wardrobe switch:
UStock your hall closet with sturdy hangers that will keep heavy overcoats from sagging. They could be wood or metal.
UMost sweaters are best folded, but if you want to hang them, use a thick, wide plastic design to help knits keep their shape.
UThe Finnish-made Euro Pants Hanger ($2.49) hangs men's or women's pants securely from their hems without leaving marks. Swiveling hook is handy.
UBright-colored hangers for kids might encourage children to hang up stuff or can color-code garments of several children.
UFollow Joan Crawford's example: Toss those flimsy dry-cleaner-issue wire hangers: Your clothes are an investment, says Newton, so your hangers should be, too.
