Salem man receives sentence in the traffic deaths of 2 women

SALEM -- A city man will serve 90 days of house arrest, 100 hours of community service and have his driver's license suspended after pleading guilty in the April traffic deaths of two elderly women.
Steven Herron, 22, of Salmar Drive, originally was charged by the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Lisbon post with two counts of vehicular homicide in the deaths of Martha Smith, 94, and Clara Mossler, 86. Both women were residents of a retirement community in Sebring.
Herron appeared Monday in Columbiana County Municipal Court and entered guilty pleas to the lesser offense of vehicular manslaughter.
Jail suspended
In addition to the other punishments, Judge Robert Roberts gave Herron a 120-day jail sentence but then suspended it.
Herron also was fined $500. His driver's license was suspended for three years, though work and college travel will be allowed.
Authorities said Herron's pickup truck rear-ended the vehicle carrying Smith and Mossler on U.S. Route 62 near Damascus. Three other women in the vehicle were injured in the crash.
