NOTEBOOK | From 3Com Park

Injuries: Browns quarterback Kelly Holcomb injured his right ankle in the first half and his left ankle in the third quarter. He's to have X-rays taken today in Cleveland. Wide receiver Kevin Johnson was knocked out of the game after a hard hit by safety Tony Parrish in the final minute. "I'm fine, I'm good to go," Johnson said of next week's game at home against the Cincinnati Bengals. 49ers nickel cornerback Jimmy Williams was knocked out of the game in the first half with a concussion. Defensive end Andre Carter strained his lower back and quarterback Jeff Garcia strained his left groin. All are listed as probable for next week's game in Minnesota.
Challenge lost: 49ers coach Dennis Erickson lost a first-quarter replay challenge that fullback Fred Beasley had crossed the goal line on a fourth-and-1 play. The ruling that Beasley was stopped was upheld.
Lineup changes: 49ers left tackle Derrick Deese was inactive for the second straight week and replaced by rookie Kwame Harris. At left guard, Kyle Kosier replaced Dwayne Ledford as starter in place of the injured Eric Heitmann.
Rough start: Owen Pochman's opening kickoff went out of bounds. The free agent from Brigham Young made his first start after replacing 2002 fourth-round draft pick Jeff Chandler. His second kickoff following the Niners' second-quarter field goal was caught by Andre Davis at the 11 and returned 19 yards. With four field goals, Pochman accounted for all the 49ers scoring.
Series: The Browns lead the series, 10-6. The last 49ers-Browns game was in 1993 at Cleveland Stadium, a 23-13 Browns win in Bernie Kosar's final season in Cleveland. The Browns' last trip to San Francisco was in 1990.
Streaks: 49ers wide receiver Terrell Owens has caught a pass in 103 straight games. ... San Francisco has scored in 405 straight games. The last time the Niners were shut out was Oct. 9, 1977. ... The Browns snapped the Niners' 36-game winning streak when they limit their opponent to 17 points or less. The Niners record since 1950 is 278-54-4 in games when the other team gets 17 or less.
Coming up: Two of the Browns' next three opponents made the playoffs last season. After the Bengals, the Browns will travel to Pittsburgh Oct. 5 (8:30 p.m.) and they play host to the Oakland Raiders, the defending AFC champions, at 1 p.m. The 49ers travel to Minnesota Sunday, then play host to the Lions Oct. 5. That game will mark the return of coach Steve Mariucci who was fired by the 49ers in January.
