Discussing orphan trains
WARREN -- Trumbull County historian Wendell Lauth will discuss 19th-century orphan trains and their connections to the Mahoning Valley during a 6:30 p.m. presentation Oct. 2 at the main branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library.
Beginning in 1854, charitable organizations began transporting orphaned children from the slums of New York to families out West. More than 7,000 children were transported to Ohio alone, including Trumbull County.
The program is free and no registration is required.

BRISTOLVILLE -- Youngstown State University Professor John White will discuss archaeological digs in Trumbull County at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bristol Public Library.

Health-related courses
CHAMPION -- The Workforce Development and Continuing Studies Center at Kent State University Trumbull Campus is offering courses on alternative medicine and anger management next month.
From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 4, Alternative Medicine: Nutritional Healing for Body and Mind will cover alternative health practices including herbs, nutrition, mind-body techniques and spiritual approaches.
From 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 13 and Oct. 15, an anger management course will help participants recognize stressors, become aware of personal levels of anger and discover ways to reduce and control anger.

Woman run over
NEW CASTLE. Pa. -- A woman trying to avoid a bee accidentally ran herself over with her car.
Police said Nancy Blue, 29, of West North Street, was stopped at Williams Street near Arlington Avenue when a bee flew in her car at 3:42 p.m. Friday.
She jumped out, but realized the car was still moving and tried to get back in, they said. Blue fell under the car and the lower half of her body was run over, police said. She was taken to Jameson Hospital for treatment.
Woman attacked, robbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- An 88-year-old West Side woman was punched in the head, knocked to the ground and robbed of her purse late Sunday morning in the Sparkle Market parking lot on Mahoning Avenue, police said.
The victim told police that when she approached her car with her groceries at 11 a.m., a man parked next to her jumped out of his car and attacked her. The suspect drove off toward Oakwood Avenue, reports show.
2 injured in shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- A shooting on the East Side on Sunday night injured two men, one of whom was arrested.
Michael Hayes, 38, of Kendis Circle, was in guarded condition today in St. Elizabeth Health Center, recovering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Jeffrey Lynn, 27, of Upland Avenue, was treated at the hospital Sunday night for a gunshot wound to his left leg. He was arrested on a charge of felonious assault.
A witness told police that the driver of a Ford Contour was "acting crazy" and firing shots as he drove through Kendis Circle. Lynn was later identified as the driver. Hayes, the witness said, was shot when he approached the Ford and told the driver to stop shooting, adding, "We have kids around here."
After Hayes was shot, Lynn's car was fired upon by people nearby, reports show. The people who fired were not identified.
