OAKLAND, Calif. -- Ted Lilly won his sixth straight start and Mark Ellis hit his first career grand slam as Oakland avoided a three-game sweep. Billy McMillon had three hits and drove in two runs as Athletics lowered their magic number to three. Lilly (12-9), pitching because scheduled starter Rich Harden had back spasms, allowed three hits in six innings. Lilly had been 0-4 against Seattle. Gil Meche (15-11) didn't get an out in the second inning, when Oakland took a 5-0 lead.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota won its ninth in a row and Detroit tied the AL record with its 117th loss. Minnesota is 14-1 against Detroit this season. Brad Radke (14-10) allowed one run and six hits in seven innings, improving to 9-1 in the second half, and Eddie Guardado pitched the ninth for his 39th save. Detroit (38-117) dropped its ninth straight game, tying the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics for the second-most losses in a season since 1900.
Royals 10, White Sox 4
CHICAGO -- Rondell White hit a two-run homer and Aaron Guiel drove in three runs as Kansas City won for the seventh time in nine games. The White Sox (81-74), who trailed 4-0 before they came to the plate, have dropped eight of 11. Darrell May (10-7) allowed four runs and six hits in eight innings. Jon Garland (11-13) lasted just 22/3 innings, matching his shortest start this season.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Roger Clemens (16-9) allowed four hits in seven innings to earn his 309th victory, moving past Hoss Radbourne into sole possession of 17th place on the career list. New York has won 13 of 15. Alfonso Soriano hit his 34th homer and Hideki Matsui drove in a run with his first major league triple.

BALTIMORE -- Reed Johnson matched his career high with four hits, including a tie-breaking single off Hector Carrasco (2-6) in a three-run eighth. Carlos Delgado had four RBIs.
Angels 11, Rangers 6
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Adam Kennedy's two-run single was the go-ahead hit as Anaheim scored seven times in the seventh to beat Texas and avoid a three-game sweep. Anaheim's outburst came a half inning after Alex Rodriguez snapped a 2-2 tie with his major league-leading 47th homer, a two-run shot, and Mark Teixeira homered for a 5-2 Texas lead. Ramon Ortiz (16-12) worked six innings for the win. It is a career high for wins.

Cardinals 6, Astros 4
ST. LOUIS -- Edgar Renteria had a key two-run double to back Sterling Hitchcock (4-1), who allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings as St. Louis overcame a 3-0 deficit against Jeriome Robertson (15-8). So Taguchi hit a two-run homer for St. Louis.

PHILADELPHIA -- With Philadelphia ahead 3-2, pinch-hitter Dernell Stenson hit a tying double in the seventh off Vicente Padilla (14-11) and scored on a bloop single by Tim Hummell. Jim Thome hit his 44th homer, a three-run shot that put the Phillies ahead 3-1 in the fourth.

ATLANTA -- Greg Maddux (15-11) became the first pitcher in major league history to win at least 15 games in 16 consecutive seasons. Cy Young did it in 15 straight years. Maddux allowed one hits in five innings for his 288th win, tying Tommy John for 22nd place. Maddux was struck on the right ankle by a hard grounder off the bat of Juan Pierre for the final out of the third. He sustained a bruise and is expected to make his next start.

NEW YORK -- Wil Cordero homered and hit a tie-breaking double in the ninth off Grant Roberts (0-2) as Montreal completed its first four-game road sweep since April 3-6, 1998, at Wrigley Field. The Mets matched a season high with their eighth consecutive loss and have dropped 16 of 17.

MILWAUKEE -- Richie Sexson, Keith Ginter and Bill Hall homered to back Wes Obermueller (1-5), who got his first major league win by allowing three runs and eight hits in six innings. He had lost his first seven major league decisions.

DENVER -- Larry Walker and Rene Reyes hit two-run homers for Colorado as Chin-hui Tsao (3-3) allowed two runs and five hits in six innings. He struck out a career-high seven.
Dodgers 7, Giants 5
LOS ANGELES -- Shawn Green hit a two-run homer, and Robin Ventura, Adrian Beltre and Jeromy Burnitz hit consecutive drives off Kevin Correia in the fourth. Dave Roberts' RBI triple against Jim Brower (8-5) put Los Angeles ahead in the seventh.
