EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon's defense found a way to stop Chris Perry -- and the rest of Michigan's lauded offense, too.
Perry, the nation's leading rusher going into the game, ran for just 26 yards as No. 22 Oregon upset No. 3 Michigan 31-27 on Saturday in front of the largest crowd ever at Autzen Stadium.
Jason Fife, half of Oregon's quarterback tandem with Kellen Clemens, ran for one touchdown, tailback Terrence Whitehead rushed for another, and the Ducks (4-0) were able to take advantage of some key Michigan (3-1) errors before 59,023 yellow-clad fans.
Michigan (3-1), making its first road trip of the season, narrowed it with John Navarre's 36-yard TD pass to Steve Breaston with 2:18 remaining, but couldn't get any closer.
Navarre's 9-yard scoring pass to Breaston and conversion pass to Braylon Edwards made it 24-21, but the Ducks answered with Jordan Carey's fumble recovery in the end zone with 6:55 remaining.
Michigan, which was averaging more than 307 yards on the ground so far this season, lost 3 yards on 19 carries.
Navarre completed 28 of 55 passes for 360 yards and three touchdowns, but he wasn't able to carry the offense.
Wisconsin 38, North Carolina 27
MADISON, Wis. -- Redshirt freshman Booker Stanley ran for three touchdowns as Wisconsin took advantage of the nation's worst defense.
Lee Evans caught five passes for 80 yards and a touchdown and surpassed Al Toon's school record for career receptions. He now has 134 catches, three more than Toon had from 1982-84.
Northwestern 28, Duke 10
DURHAM, N.C. -- Jason Wright ran for 149 yards and two touchdowns and Northwestern's defense rebounded from a dreadful performance last week.
Noah Herron ran for 100 yards and a 69-yard touchdown for Northwestern (2-2), while Brett Basanez added a rushing score.
One week after allowing 44 points and 515 yards in a loss to Miami (Ohio), Northwestern held Duke to 151 yards through three quarters.
Purdue 59, Arizona 7
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Kyle Orton threw three touchdown passes and Jerod Void and Jerome Brooks each ran for two TDs for No. 25 Purdue.
The Boilermakers (2-1) won at home for only the second time in five games, making it look easy against the Wildcats (1-3).
Void carried 12 times for 60 yards and two scores before leaving. Brooks finished with 21 carries for 122 yards in backup duty, and Orton completed 16 of 28 passes for 261 yards, including a career-long 81-yard TD pass to John Standeford, before being pulled late in the third quarter.
Standeford caught four passes for 111 yards, finishing one reception short of Tim Stratton's school record (204).
Meanwhile, the Wildcats were plagued by dropped passes, errant throws, turnovers, poor decisions and costly penalties. The result was predictable.
Arizona managed 174 yards in total offense and just 66 yards rushing against a dominant defense.
California 31, Illinois 24
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- A 68-yard punt return by Vincent Strang late in the first half put California up by two touchdowns, and the Golden Bears withstood a furious Illinois rally in the final five minutes.
Illinois (1-3) was forced to use its final timeout with 11:15 remaining when it had the wrong personnel on the field. That proved crucial after John Gockman's 32-yard field goal pulled the Illini within seven points with 1:42 remaining.
Illinois recovered an onside kick and had a chance to tie. Forced to hurry, they got to the 4 before quarterback Jon Beutjer was sacked on the game's final play.
