YOUNGSTOWN -- Daryll Clark ran for two touchdowns, passed for another score and accounted for 214 yards of total offense as the Ursuline High football team posted a 28-12 victory over Rochester (N.Y.) Aquinas on Friday at YSU Stambaugh Stadium.
"This was a big win for us because we knew very little about Aquinas," Ursuline coach Dan Murphy said. "We had no tape on them but knew full well that their 0-2 record was a bit deceiving.
"They gave us different looks on both sides of the ball tonight, but we expected that," Murphy said. "Our biggest thing was to come out of this game healthy, and I think we accomplished that. We are a little banged up and we need to heal as we head into the heart of our schedule."
The win was the third in a row by the Fighting Irish (3-2), all over out-of-state opponents.
The Aquinas Lil' Irish, defending New York state champions in their classification, fell for the third time in three outings.
Takes lead at half
Right before halftime, Ursuline stopped Aquinas running back Jirod Webb for no gain on a fourth-and-1 at the Ursuline 47.
With 1:31 remaining in the half, Clark completed passes to Derrick Stewart and Walt Lacey to advance the ball to the Aquinas 39.
Clark capped the five-play, 59-second drive with a 40-yard strike to Stewart. Raphael Lima kicked the extra point for Ursuline's 7-0 lead.
"Daryll Clark sees the entire field and makes big plays when you need them most," Murphy said. "He is a great leader who always wants to make the play.
"Our defense was on the field a little more than we had hoped tonight, but we kept them out of the end zone, and that was our main goal," Murphy said.
Ursuline managed just eight ground yards on 12 carries in the first half.
Junior Alex Allen netted 32 on the second play after intermission, setting up Clark's rushing touchdown 49 seconds into the third quarter for a 14-0 lead.
Aquinas scores
Aquinas responded with a 12-play, 71-yard drive capped by Mike Sondaricker's 3-yard run. The placement was blocked to keep Ursuline ahead by eight.
Ursuline's Terrell Washington scored on a 15-yard run 11 seconds into the final quarter for a 21-6 advantage.
Aquinas' Ricky DiFranco scored from 14 yards out to cut the lead to 21-12.
Clark scampered 53 yards to the Aquinas 4-yard line, scoring on the very next play to put the game out of reach. He completed 11 of 21 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown. His 65 yards on 12 carries made him one of three Fighting Irish backs with at least 65 yards. Washington had 70 yards on 15 carries and Allen had 65 yards on seven carries.
