MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Graham Gochneaur threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jason Rader with just over 31/2 minutes remaining as Marshall upset No. 6 Kansas State 27-20 on Saturday.
Gochneaur, making his second start in relief of the injured Stan Hill, was 16-for-24 for 106 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.
Kansas State's Jeff Schwinn, another backup making his second start, was 14-for-26 for 241 yards, but also fumbled twice and threw an interception.
Hill has a sprained left knee, and Kansas State quarterback Ell Roberson has an injured left wrist.
Kansas State (4-1) had one last chance to force overtime, when Schwinn's 33-yard pass to Darren Sproles gave the Wildcats a first down at the Marshall 3 with 25 seconds remaining.
Schwinn ran for 1 yard on first down, and the Wildcats were penalized 5 yards for snapping the ball on second down before it was set. Schwinn spiked the ball, then threw to Sproles for a 1-yard gain.
Schwinn's throw to Davin Dennis fell incomplete in the end zone as time ran out.
The Thundering Herd (2-2), known more for passing than for defense or rushing, forced four turnovers and got 112 yards rushing from Franklin Wallace. And after giving up an average of almost 203 yards rushing in their first three games, they held the Wildcats to 127 yards.
They also held Sproles -- who was averaging almost 120 yards on the ground -- to 77 yards on 14 carries and stuffed Schwinn on fourth-and-2 from the 3 on Kansas State's first drive of the second half.
Miami 41, Colorado St. 21
FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Mike Smith ran for 118 yards and three touchdowns and Ben Roethlisberger passed for two more scores.
The RedHawks' pass-oriented offense generated 536 yards compared to 388 for Colorado State and opened up 20-point leads on three occasions in the second half.
Roethlisberger completed 29-of-39 passes for 330 yards, eclipsing 300 yards for the second straight game. The Miami (2-1) defense, meanwhile, held Colorado State, which had been averaging 213 yards rushing, to 39 on the ground.
Bradlee Van Pelt threw for 323 yards and three TDs for Colorado State (2-2).
Early in the third quarter following a Colorado State fumble, Roethlisberger scrambled and threw his second TD pass, a 15-yarder to Michael Larkin, to make it 24-7.
Roethlisberger completed an 18-yard pass to Martin Nance to set up Todd Soderquist's 21-yard field goal for a 27-7 lead with 1:20 remaining in the period.
Colorado State scored just 24 seconds later on Van Pelt's 86-yarder to David Anderson, to cut the deficit to 27-14.
On fourth-and-15 from the CSU 29, Roethlisberger ran right on the option and pitched to Smith for a touchdown with 9:19 remaining.
Van Pelt hit Anderson again, on a 16-yarder, to make it 34-21 with 4:59 remaining, but Miami recovered the ensuing onside kick and Smith bolted 45 yards for his third score.
Navy 39, Eastern Michigan 7
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Craig Candeto threw for one touchdown and ran for another as Navy racked up 464 yards of total offense.
Led by Candeto (18 carries, 72 yards), slotback Tony Lane (5-83) and fullback Kyle Eckel (13-56), Navy (2-1) outgained Eastern Michigan 372-32 on the ground.
Ball State 27, Central Michigan 14
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Talmadge Hill threw three touchdown passes to Dante Ridgeway.
Hill and Ridgeway connected on touchdown passes of 24, 14 and 3 yards, and Ridgeway finished with 10 receptions for 103 yards for the Cardinals (2-2, 1-0 MAC).
After taking a 17-14 lead, Ball State scored 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Hill closed a 13-play drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Ridgeway with 9:30 remaining, and Brian Jackson kicked a 38-yard field goal with 31 seconds remaining to close out scoring.
