DISTRICT Fitch thwarts Perry's comeback, 21-19



Boardman lost to Jackson while Rayen and Poland won.
MASSILLON -- The Austintown Fitch High football team's defense thwarted two Massillon Perry scoring threats in the fourth quarter Friday to blunt the Panthers' second-half comeback and escape with a 21-19 victory.
With Fitch (4-1) leading 21-19, Perry's conversion pass with 6:29 left was thrown short and the receiver trapped the ball.
But Perry (2-3) got back the ball at its 26 with 1:35 left and drove to the Fitch 37. However, Mike Eliseo intercepted a pass at the Falcons' 28 with 36 seconds left to preserve the win.
After Perry scored the first TD of the game on Ryan Jedel's 11-yard run, Fitch reeled off 21 straight points to take a 21-6 advantage.
Eric Chine scored on a 1-yard plunge and John Mang raced 13 yards to the second tally, both scores coming in the second quarter. Then Mang hit Jeff Kotel with a 28-yard scoring strike in the third quarter.
Perry then rallied on Jason Foote's 45-yard TD strike to Joe Cerreta in the third, and Jedel's 37-yard TD run in the fourth.
Mang finished with 130 yards passing on 7-for-14, and he added 60 yards rushing in 12 carries. Eric Chine had 72 yards in 20 carries, Eliseo 60 yards in 12 carries.
Foote threw for 82 yards on 4-for-14 for Perry while Ray Siler had 66 yards rushing in 14 carries and Jedel had 58 yards in eight tries.
Massillon Jackson 35, Boardman 2
BOARDMAN -- Mike Nemeth scored four touchdowns and Jackson (5-0) rolled up a 205-65 yard advantage on the ground.
Boardman (0-5) had 158 yards through the air, but managed just a third quarter safety to avoid the shutout.
Rayen 18, Canton Timken 0
CANTON -- Marvin Stanford turned in the play of the game for the Rayen in a City Series matchup.
With Rayen leading 6-0 but with Timken threatening at the Tigers' 4-yard line, Stanford intercepted a pass and streaked 84 yards to a touchdown.
Kevin Faucette got the last score for Rayen (2-3, 1-0) in the final quarter on a 29-yard dash. Mark Jones scored Rayen's first TD in the second quarter on a 9-yard dash.
Jones led the Tigers' attack with 53 yards passing on 7-for-17, while Phil Morgan rushed for 42 yards in 13 carries.
Quarterback John Boston led Timken (0-5, 0-1) with 53 yards passing on 5-for-16, but with two interceptions.
Poland 18, Niles 7
NILES -- Jim Shurilla of the Bulldogs (4-1, 2-1) rushed for 178 yards on 28 carries, including touchdown runs of 12 and 14 yards.
Shurilla put the Bulldogs ahead 6-0 on the 12-yard scamper.
Quarterback Bobby Smith tallied for the Red Dragons (2-3, 1-1) as Niles took a 7-6 lead.
Dave Koval caught a 20-yard TD pass from Reid Lamport to put Poland ahead for keeps 12-7 at halftime.
Alliance 15,Uniontown Lake 14
ALLIANCE -- Charles Babb scored on a 10-yard run and Kendall Davis ran it in from 5 yards out for the Aviators (3-2).
Babb passed for 95 yards by completing 9 of 16 passes.
