CAMPBELL -- The East Liverpool High football team had eight turnovers against Campbell. The Red Devils had one.
You can probably guess what happened.
Despite being outgained 458-207, Campbell rallied from a 14-0 deficit to upend the Potters, 21-14, Friday at John Knapick Field.
And Darrel Johnson played a huge part.
The Red Devils sophomore threw a touchdown pass on a halfback option, caught a 33-yard touchdown from quarterback Ricky Quinn, intercepted two passes and scored the game-winning touchdown on a 19-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
"Darrel Johnson showed that he can be potentially as good as [former Campbell star] Deland McCullough," Campbell coach John Ryan said. "But he has to keep working to get better. & quot;
Johnson finished with just 35 yards on eight carries as the Red Devils struggled to run the ball, finishing with 45 yards on 25 attempts. Quinn hit 6 of 15 passes for 105 yards and an interception.
Interceptions
East Liverpool quarterback Justin McElhaney had five interceptions, and the Potters also lost three fumbles.
"We knew that turnovers were going to be important," Ryan said. "We have had trouble in the past with them ourselves, but we did a great job of taking care of the ball tonight."
East Liverpool scored first on an eight-play, 67-yard drive, capped by a 5-yard run by McElhaney. The Potters made it 14-0 when McElhaney sprinted around the left end and raced 59 yards for the score.
McElhaney finished with 20 carries for 200 yards and was also 9 of 19 passing for 171 yards.
East Liverpool was driving again late in the second quarter when Campbell's Will Simon intercepted a pass and returned it to the Red Devil 35. Three plays later, Johnson hit D.J. Raseta for a 57-yard touchdown to make it 14-7 at halftime.
"To be able to come back after being two scores down and getting one before the half was important," Ryan said.
After recovering an East Liverpool fumble at the Potter 35, Quinn hit Johnson over the middle with a 33-yard touchdown pass on fourth and 22, tying the game at 14 midway through the third quarter.
Johnson's second interception set up his 19-yard scoring run with 10:14 left in the fourth.
The Potters' next drive stalled, but after forcing Campbell to punt, McElhaney threw a crucial interception to Quinn on Campbell's 8 yard line and the Red Devils ran out the clock.
