Notable players: Several Division I college recruits, including tackle Bob Maggs and center John Lucente, who went to Ohio State; quarterback Ralph DePasco, fullback Mike Hardie and tight end Rick Shepas went to YSU; tight end Jim Boniface (Princeton), lineman John Thomas (Georgia Tech) and tailback Steve Johnson (Michigan). First team All-SVC players included Jack Kohl, Hardie, Terry Reardon, Maggs, DePasco, Mike Giambattista, Mark Kachmer, Boniface and Lucente.
Notebook: Mooney still holds Division II state championship game records for points (50), points in a quarter (22), touchdowns (7) and rushing yards (362). This was the only Mooney team to finish undefeated since the playoffs began in 1972. The Cardinals won 25 straight games from 1979-81. Mooney's three playoff opponents had a combined record of 29-1-3 before playing the Cardinals. Three players ran for more than 100 yards in the title game: DePasco (106), Hardie (102), Johnson (102). The regular season game against Boardman was canceled due to a teacher's strike. Boardman, which had to cancel four games, finished 6-0 and missed the playoffs. Bernie Kosar was a junior for the Spartans that season.
