SOCCER Howland blanks Poland; Chappell scores twice



Ursuline and Fitch battled to a 1-1 tie, while state-ranked Champion topped Newton Falls.
HOWLAND -- Cody Chappell scored two goals as Howland High blanked Poland 3-0 Thursday in a Metro Athletic Conference boys soccer game.
Marc Dunbar scored the other goal for the Tigers (6-1-2, 4-0-1). Mark Hammmond, Neil Clagett and Jason Stan had an assist apiece.
Howland goalkeeper Zack Roscoe recorded his fourth shutout of the season and had two saves for the Tigers.
Alliance 3, Salem 0
SALEM -- Dustin Brown had two goals and Matt Paidas added another for Alliance (6-2-1, 4-1-1 MAC).
Mike Gross added two assists, Curt Ruggles had an assist and Dan Hisey had five saves for the Aviators.
Andrew Loudon had 11 saves for Salem (2-8, 0-6).
Fitch 1, Ursuline 1
AUSTINTOWN -- Nick Chaney scored and Dan Craig had an assist for Ursuline (3-6-1). Gerad Daly registered 13 saves.
Anthony Colaluca scored on an assist by Brad Hrinko for Fitch (1-6-2). Pat Passewitz stopped seven shots.
Champion 4, Newton Falls 0
CHAMPION -- John Emery had two goals and an assist to lead Champion in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Mike Harrison and Pat Roden also had goals for the Golden Flashes, who are ranked fifth in the state in Division III. Zach Gumont also had an assist and Jason Black added 12 saves for Champion (10-0, 5-0).
Brent Davis had 12 saves for Newton Falls (5-3, 2-3).
Beaver Local 5, United 2
LISBON -- Josh Dalrymple and Andy Lubich each scored two goals to pace the Beavers (9-0-2). Shawn Dunn added one goal.
Marcus Barkley and Ben Stryffler each scored a goal for the Golden Eagles (2-7). Austin Dangler had an assist.
Evan Egli had 22 saves for United.
Maplewood 6, Lordstown 1
LORDSTOWN -- Brian Hivick had four goals and an assist and Ronaldo Smith added two goals and two assists for Maplewood (6-2).
Paul Trupe and Chad Springer also added assists for the Rockets, while keeper Dustin Slusher had eight saves.
Max Gibson scored for Lordstown and Brandon Wickline added 13 saves.
Girls
GIRARD -- Lauren Natale scored two goals, while Melissa Peterson had a goal and an assist and Lauren Perisa and Sarah Moffett scored a goal apiece, as Warren JFK defeated Girard 5-2.
Lauren Broadbent had an assist for the Eagles (6-1-2).
Aarika Knepp had six saves for JFK. Angela Diperio had 21 saves for Girard (0-7).
West Branch 3, Champion 0
BELOIT -- Paige Stryfeller, Abbie Cronin and Ashley Kurena each scored a goal for the Warriors (7-0-3). Anina Beegle had an assist.
Goalkeeper Carlie Poffenberger had five saves for the Warriors. Jessica Wood had 17 saves for the Golden Flashes (6-5).
West Branch also defeated Minerva 10-1. Niki Brown led the Warriors with three goals, while Beegle added two. McKenzie Wallace had two assists.
Ursuline 4, Wilmington 2
STRUTHERS -- Senior Katie Frank scored three goals to spark Ursuline.
Senior Jessie Kausits also scored for the Irish (4-4-1). Sophomore Mariah Snyder and Kausits had an assist apiece for Ursuline. Goalkeeper Missy Russo, also a senior, had seven saves.
