NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts has added nine new classes to its fall schedule. They are: ceramics, basic drawing for preteens, pastel drawing, painting basics, calligraphy, portrait sculpture, photography with 35 mm cameras, and two plein air watercolor landscape workshops. Musical on jazz legends
YOUNGSTOWN -- Tickets will go on sale Sept. 29 for "Legends: A Musical Journey Through Jazz," an original musical by city resident Martha Brogdon. Performances will be Feb. 20 and 21 at Youngstown Playhouse, off Glenwood Avenue. Tickets will be sold at the Playhouse. Brogdon says "Legends" tells the stories of influential jazz singers from the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries, including Bessie Smith, Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Billy Eckstine.
Civil War re-enactment
CANFIELD -- Experience history at a Civil War encampment Oct. 11 and 12 at Loghurst, the Western Reserve Historical Society property at 3967 Boardman-Canfield Road. Participants will recreate maneuvers and battles, and onlookers may pose for photos in Confederate or Union soldiers' clothing. There also will be lectures, live dulcimer music, blacksmithing, a quilting display and homemade ice cream. Admission is $4 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. Performing arts series
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A new Performing Arts Sampler Series is available to people who are interested in Pittsburgh's Cultural District events. The PASS program features admission to three performances: "The Barber of Seville" by Pittsburgh Opera at 2 p.m. Oct. 19 at Benedum Center; "Twelfth Night" by Shakespeare's Globe Theater at 1 p.m. Nov. 16 at Theater Square; and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's annual holiday pops concert at 2 p.m. Dec. 20 at Heinz Hall. Other benefits include round-trip bus transportation; private receptions at two performances; and free shuttle service to downtown Pittsburgh shopping places in December. Cost is $249. Wind ensemble's top spot
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Not only did Westminster College's Wind Ensemble receive an invitation to perform next April at the Pennsylvania Music Educators State Conference in Erie, it's been scheduled to perform in the most coveted time slot. Westminster's Wind Ensemble will be one of 25 groups from across the state to perform at the conference out of 150 hopefuls. The Westminster group will perform just before the address from the state secretary of education.
A change in the weather
YOUNGSTOWN -- WFMJ Channel 21's new chief meteorologist, Dave Trygar, will give his first local forecast Oct. 13. Trygar earned a bachelor of science degree in meteorology at Pennsylvania State University. He has been working as weekend weather anchor at WBRE-TV in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Trygar's predecessor at WFMJ, Dr. Dave Walker, is making a career change.
Schedule correction
Two of the movies in the blues series on PBS 45/49 will be running at times different from those printed in Thursday's paper.
"Red White & amp; Blues" by Mike Figgis will air at 5 p.m. Oct. 4. "Piano Blues," directed by Clint Eastwood, will be carried at 7 p.m. Oct. 5.
