HELOISE She likes discount cards better than coupons

Dear Heloise: I disagree with the reader who doesn't like supermarket discount cards -- I think they are much better than coupons! I used to carry a purse full of store coupons that expired weekly or were only good on Wednesdays, etc. I would much rather produce a plastic key card to reap all the discount benefits. Plus, some of the stores automatically track your total and give you a free turkey or ham for a holiday.
At my pharmacy, they offer me money-off-purchase coupons by mail based on my total monthly expenditure. This also has to be easier for the cashier! If only manufacturers' coupons would work this way! Rhonda, Via E-mail
Rhonda, you are right about the convenience and savings, but please be aware that the store is also collecting your shopping information. Just thought you should know. Heloise

Dear Heloise: After packing two children off to college, I have some ideas. Instead of using boxes to pack, use plastic stacking cubes. These can later be used as bookshelves and closet organizers. Also, pack things in plastic tubs, as these are good for storing out-of-season clothes and laundry, and as laundry baskets.
Don't buy a laundry basket. It will wear out in no time. Don't go overboard on sheets and towels. There is not enough storage space in dorm rooms.
One of the best things I did for my children was pack cold remedies, pain relievers, etc. When you are sick, you don't want to go out to get something. Paula D., Honey Grove, Pa.
Dear Heloise: I have just returned home from a lengthy hospital stay. Although my home-health-care nurses say I am able to care for myself, at bathtime I call a friend to tell her where I will be. We each set a timer, and if I do not call her within the time we set, she calls 911.
There has never been a problem, but I feel confident that if I do have trouble, help is as near as my phone, and my friend does not have to leave home to help me! S. from Forney, Texas
Dear Heloise: I love your column -- I always find something useful there. Thank you for what you do. My pet peeve is the new design of coffee cans, both small and large. They have an inner lip that somebody thought would be helpful for some reason, but I don't like it at all. I've always used the cans under the sink for food scraps and as waste cans in my vehicles, but now the plastic bags rip and tear as I pull them -- or worse, don't come out at all. So much for reduce/reuse/recycle! John in New Hampshire
