One big 'happy family'
Toy-maker Mattel has added another generation to its Barbie family.
The Happy Family grandparents -- Midge's mom and dad -- were introduced earlier this month to coincide with Grandparents Day.
The Happy Family line, launched early this year, includes Midge, her husband Alan, their toddler son Ryan, and an unnamed "baby on the way." Meanwhile, Midge's longtime friend Barbie apparently went and got a medical degree and now comes packaged as Baby Doctor Barbie.
The Happy Family "Grandma's Kitchen" gift set, which sells for about $50, includes the new grandma and grandpa dolls and a tiny kitchen complete with oven, refrigerator and food that changes colors when its cooked.
"Grandparents play a bigger role in the lives of many children today, whether taking care of them while mom and dad are away, or even assuming primary responsibility," said Michael Shore, consumer insight specialist for Mattel. "Now the Happy Family line reflects that in a way that is interactive and engaging for girls."
