Decision on East Side name for school is the right one

Decision on East Side namefor school is the right one
EDITOR:
I read with interest the recent letter critical of the Youngstown Board of Education decision to name the new East Side high school "East High."
The close vote indicated that some of the board members were not of the same mind. The writer evidently doesn't understand the rationale behind the strong support of the East High Hall of Fame Committee and the East High Alumni Association's position in favor of naming the new high school "East High."
I'm old enough that I can remember when city series football games were played at Rayen or South Stadium and city series basketball games were played at South Field House. East Siders didn't complain about those locations, it was just understood.
The East Side has dealt with numerous school closings: North High on the far East Side, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Thorn Hill, Warren Richey, Harrison and the former East High becoming a middle school.
East High has a proud and rich heritage, as do many other schools in our area.
High school students being assigned to the new East High and Chaney High will soon adapt to their new school's environment and be proud to be called "Golden Bears" or "Cowboys." East and Chaney will be quality educational facilities as they have been in the past.
If the new high school were to be located on another side of town, East Siders and those involved in the East High Alumni Association and the East High Hall of Fame would have no quarrel with a name suitable to that particular area.

Youngstown School Districthas neglected South Side
EDITOR:
I am a Youngstown resident, taxpayer and voter. While I truly applaud the Youngstown school district and the Youngstown school board in their efforts to build new schools and renovate old schools especially on the East Side and West Side of town, I believe that the taxpayers and school children on the South Side deserve better than what they have been given over the years.
I believe, like in the past, the taxpayer and schoolchildren on the South Side of Youngstown (except for the building of a few schools) have been purposely and intentionally neglected by the school board and Superintendent Ben McGee. For example, there was the closing of South High School a few years ago -- a school that was historical and rich in tradition, and whose alumni is second to none in the Mahoning Valley or in the country.
I ask, where is the battle cry to build a new South High School by the school district, Lock Beachum and McGee?
I believe that the taxpayers and school children on the South Side deserve better from the Youngstown school district than closings and busing our children to other parts of town.
Is there any wonder why there are five charter schools with more than 1,500 pupils on the South Side of Youngstown?

Stop the East High letters
EDITOR:
If I read another letter to the editor regarding the naming of the new high school on Youngstown's East Side, I'm going to puke.
Please, have mercy on your sane readers. Of all the concerns of people that you could choose to publish, those that could genuinely go a long way to make this a better community, you give space to this ridiculous subject. Get a life already.
