GROVE CITY, Pa. - Dr. Gillis J. Harp, a history professor at Grove City College has written a biography of 19th century Episcopalian Bishop Phillips Brooks.
The publisher, Rowman & amp; Littlefield, will release "Brahmin Prophet: Phillips Brooks and the Path of Liberal Protestantism" in October. The book is part of a series titled "American Intellectual Culture."
Bishop Brooks, the author of the Christmas carol, "O Little Town of Bethlehem," was also one of the most popular preachers during the Gilded Age in America. Harp outlines how he became a spokesman for the liberal movement within the Episcopal Church.
Work for the book, which was made possible by a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, began in the early 1990s.
Singer and speaker
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Burt Kettinger, baritone soloist from Wheaton, Ill., will present his ministry at 10:45 a.m. Sept. 28 in New Middletown Free Methodist Community Church.
For more than 28 years, he has traveled the U.S., Canada and other parts of the world presenting a blend of musical styles with scriptural thoughts and insights.
From 1974 to 1987, Burt was heard each week as the soloist on "Moody Presents," the international broadcast of The Moody Bible Institute in Chicago.
Burt has several recordings which will be available at the church, including his newest release, "Stand in Awe."
Peacemaker conference
YOUNGSTOWN -- Christian Peacemaker Congress VII: Uniting the Races for Homeland Security and World Peace will be Thursday through Sunday in John Knox Presbyterian Church.

Two talks are open to the public. The speakers are: Dr. Bernard Lafayette, co-founder of Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and director of the Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies at the University of Rhode Island, who will speak on "Organizing Nonviolent Struggle in an Era of Neocolonialism and Terrorism" at 7 p.m. Thursday; Ruby Nell Sales, director of Spirit House in Washington D.C. and national co-convener of Every Church A Peace Church, will speak on, "Moving From Fragmentation to Community," at 7 p.m. Friday.
Prayer breakfast set
NORTH JACKSON -- Bishop Thomas J. Tobin will preside at morning prayer when he hosts the Fifth Annual Human Life Guild Prayer Breakfast from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Oct. 4 at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon. The speaker will be Kimberly Hahn, author of "Life-Giving Love: Embracing God's Beautiful Design for Your Marriage." The catered breakfast is $10 per person. 80th anniversary
