Arrest in man's shooting
FARRELL, Pa. -- Police arrested Alfred A. Griffin, 29, of St. Andrews Drive, Canfield, on assault and other charges in the shooting of a Farrell man. Police said Fred Odem, 42, was shot once in the left thigh as he crossed Roemer Boulevard in front of Roamers Bar around 9:25 p.m. Thursday. He was treated at UPMC Horizon. Witnesses gave police a description of the car in which Griffin was riding, and officers stopped it nearby on Beechwood Avenue. Griffin was held overnight for arraignment on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and carrying a firearm without a license. Police said Odem walked across the street in front of the car in which Griffin was a passenger, and they allege Griffin opened the car and shot Odem.
Man struck by car dies
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A 25-year-old New Castle man died after being struck by a car at 6:20 p.m. Thursday on Pa. Route 60 in Union Township. Pennsylvania State Police said Richard Allen III was parked on the side of the road, putting gas in his car from a gas can. He was hit by a car driven by Curtis Stover, 25, of New Castle. Stover had not veered from his lane and did not contribute to the accident, reports say. No charges were filed.
West Nile virus found
HARRISBURG -- The Pennsylvania Department of Health has confirmed that two more dead birds found in Lawrence County tested positive for the West Nile virus. The dead blue jays were found in Union Township and New Castle. So far, five dead birds, one mosquito pool and two people have tested positive for the disease in Lawrence County.
Supervisor hurt at plant
WHEATLAND, Pa. -- A supervisor performing the work of striking employees at Wheatland Tube Co. suffered a leg injury in an accident in the plant. Company officials were unavailable to confirm the accident, but Dom Vadala, chief negotiator for striking Local 1660 of the United Steelworkers of America, said strikers learned the foreman, Gerald Elliott, was hurt in the galvanizing department Wednesday. He was taken to a local hospital and then to UPMC Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he was in fair condition today.
Career center hairstyling
LISBON -- The cosmetology department of Columbiana County Career Center is now open Thursdays and Fridays at 11:30 a.m. The services offered by students include permanent waving, hair coloring and styling, haircuts, facials with makeup and manicures with paraffin treatments. Also offered is cyber-imaging, which shows what the customer would look like with different hairstyles and colors. All services are given under the guidance of cosmetology instructor Karen Grimes. All-terrain vehicle stolen
SALEM -- Perry Township police said someone took a yellow 2002 Honda 400RX Quad 4 all-terrain vehicle from property in the 1500 block of Depot Road. The owner called police around 6:43 a.m. Thursday and said the theft occurred sometime overnight.
Threatening e-mail
SALEM -- An employee of Electric Furnace Co. at 435 W. Wilson told police that someone has been sending numerous threatening e-mails to the business. The content of the e-mails suggests the sender is familiar with the business owners and employees.
Mushroom Mania event
BUTLER, Pa. -- They're just wild about mushrooms. Mushroom Mania 5 will be from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Econo Lodge on Pa. Route 8 in Butler. Mushroom expert Gary Lincoff will speak. The conference is sponsored by the Western Pennsylvania Mushroom Club.
Agencies get drug funds
YOUNGSTOWN -- Eight area police agencies in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties and a state agency have shared more than $111,000 from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration in forfeited drug-related proceeds.
The departments took part in a narcotics investigation conducted by the DEA's task force in Youngstown that concluded last January.
The departments and shares include: Mahoning County Sheriff's Office, $16,055; Salem police, $15,745; Boardman and Warren police, $13,835 each; and the Youngstown, Canfield, Poland and Beaver Township police departments, $10,391 each.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification received $10,391.
