The District 8 Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary is seeking members. Women age 16 or older who are the mother, grandmother, wife, sister, daughter or stepdaughter of a veteran that served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm or Iraq, are eligible.
District 8 covers Trumbull, Mahoning, Portage and Summit counties. Call (330) 889-3725 for information.

Leaving active duty
Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Michael W. Hazen, son of Bruce Hazen in Massachusetts, has retired from active duty after 22 years of service. His wife, Carla, is the daughter of Wanda S. Hazen of East Palestine.
Hazen, a 1981 graduate of Mahar Regional High School, Orange, Mass., most recently served at Fleet Combat Training Center Atlantic, Virginia Beach, Va. Hazen, an operations specialist, received the Navy Achievement Medal upon retirement.

Navy: Navy Seaman Apprentice Jesse J. Walker (Niles McKinley High School, '03), son of Debra J. Feigert of Niles, and James C. Walker of Symsonia, Ky.; Seaman Recruit Bryan M. Walsh (Canfield High School, '02), son of Tammi E. Kloos of Youngstown and Leo J. Walsh of Warren.
PROMOTIONS
Technical sergeant
Brian P. Lowers was promoted to the rank of technical sergeant in the Air Force. He is the son of Kathy J. Linville of New Waterford and is a 1991 graduate of Crestview High School, East Fairfield.
Post-training commission
Air Force 2nd Lt. Patrick L. Wren, son of Christopher L. and Janis L. Wren of Hubbard, was commissioned after completing the six-week Reserve Officer Training Corps Field Training at Lackland AFB, Texas.
Wren is a 1998 graduate of Hubbard High School and a 2003 graduate of Ohio University, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. He has been assigned to the civil-engineering squadron of the 90th Space Wing at F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyo.
DEPLOYED
Returned to S. Carolina
Army Reserve 1st Lt. John M. Cidila Jr. has returned to the 38th Ordnance Group in Charleston, S.C., after being deployed to an overseas forward operating location in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Cidila is a munitions materiel management officer with 20 years of military service. He is the son of Lynn E. Cidila of Hermitage, Pa. His wife, Dee, is the daughter of Kenneth and Delores Russell of Farrell. The lieutenant graduated in 1982 from Hickory High School, Hermitage.
On USS Enterprise
Several area residents were among sailors assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise for a six-month deployment. The Enterprise is the first aircraft carrier to deploy since the end of major military operations in Iraq.
They include: Seaman Ryan L. Call, son of Candis L. Marshall of Wellsville. He is a 2000 graduate of Wellsville High School.
Airman James E. Clinton, son of Beverly J. and John E. Clinton of Girard. He is a 2001 graduate of Liberty High School.
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Shayla M. Jones, daughter of Fayette J. and Freddie F. Leonard of Youngstown. She is a 1999 graduate of Youngstown Cardinal Mooney High School.
Chief Petty Officer Robert J. Pavel, son of Barbara Berchik of Struthers.
Petty Officer 3rd Class David W. Young, son of Darlene M. and David W. Young of Rogers.
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Joshua M. Stoica, son of Renee A. and Michael J. Stoica of East Liverpool. Stoica is a 1999 graduate of Beaver High School of Lisbon.
Sent to Baghdad
Army Spec. Patrick D. Howard was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, as part of the 34th Armored Division from Fort Riley, Kan. Howard, a son of John and Sandy Howard-Allie of Youngstown, graduated in 1999 from Mount Calvary Christian Academy in Youngstown.
