RUBIK'S FACTS
RUBIK'S FACTS
Hungarian professor Erno Rubik invented the cube in 1974.
It has become the world's all-time best-selling toy or game with more than 250 million sold.
Cube-a-holics Anonymous was founded in 1980 by self-confessed "cubomaniac" Augustus Judd.
Initial attempts to find an international distributor for the cube failed. It was deemed too abstract, too cerebral and too difficult a puzzle for the general public.
After a six-year hiatus, the cube was reintroduced in 1991 by Rubik and London manufacturer Seven Towns Limited. Sales have been a fraction of what they were in the early 1980s but still robust.
Rubik is still living in Hungary and still designing puzzles. For more information, check the Web at rubiks.com, speedcubing.com, rubikschamps.com and twistymegasite.com.
