NFL ROUNDUP News and notes

League: The 2007 Super Bowl was awarded to Miami. The owners ratified a decision made last spring to hold the game at Pro Player Stadium. Miami has hosted the Super Bowl eight times (1968, '69, '71, '76, '79, '89, '95, and '99), fewer than only New Orleans (nine times). Houston will host this season's Super Bowl on Feb. 1 and next season's game will be in Jacksonville. Detroit will host the game in 2006. The site of the 2008 Super Bowl will be decided at owners' meetings in Chicago on Oct. 29-30. The contenders are Arizona, Tampa, Washington and New York-New Jersey. The league also agreed to extend the life of NFL Europe for two more seasons, but did so by the slimmest possible margin -- it got the minimum 24 votes needed for approval.
Chargers: Rookie linebacker Matt Wilhelm was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence, general manager A.J. Smith confirmed Tuesday. Circumstances of Wilhelm's arrest Sunday and details on his bail and arraignment were not immediately available. A San Diego County jail operator said Wilhelm was released Monday, but added that she could not give any other information such as whether Wilhelm was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Wilhelm, a fourth-round draft pick after helping Ohio State win the national championship last season, was inactive for the Chargers' first two games. He's the second Chargers player to be arrested in four weeks. Defensive tackle Leonardo Carson was charged with first-degree burglary and second-degree kidnapping in August in Mobile, Ala. Also, cornerback Tay Cody was waived and rookie receiver Grant Mattos was signed from the practice squad.
Patriots: Linebacker Rosevelt Colvin will miss at least one game with a hip injury. Colvin hurt his left hip early in the second quarter of Sunday's win at Philadelphia when he recovered a fumble by Donovan McNabb.
Bears: Rookie safety Cameron Worrell will miss three to four weeks after arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee. Worrell, undrafted out of Fresno State, played mostly on special teams in the first two games. The Bears also announced they had signed guard Qasmin Mitchell to their practice squad and released guard Shane Grice from the practice squad.
Broncos: Quarterback Danny Kanell was re-signed. Kanell signed with Denver in the off-season, but was released Sept. 1. Cornerback Roosevelt Williams and fullback Kyle Johnson were and cornerback Brandon Williams was activated from the practice squad.
Panthers: Jarrod Cooper acknowledged he needs help following his second drunken driving arrest. The defensive back was arrested early Tuesday and charged with driving while intoxicated, possession of a controlled substance, speeding and driving with a revoked license.
Titans: Quarterback Steve McNair tried to throw and take part in practice Wednesday, but pain from a dislocated finger on his throwing hand made him stop. McNair threw during individual drills and early in a passing drill, but he had to stop because of discomfort in the finger he dislocated in Sunday's loss to Indianapolis. Starting right guard Benji Olson did not practice and wore a brace on his right knee, which he sprained last weekend. Tom Ackerman likely will start in his place. Starting defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth also did not practice and likely will be out at least two weeks because of an injured left elbow.
Buccaneers: Quarterback Brad Johnson was limited in practice Wednesday because of a strained left groin but he is listed as probable for Sunday's game against the Falcons.
Texans: Safety Marlon McCree was claimed off waivers from the Jaguars and safety Travares Tillman was released. McCree started 27 of 31 games in three seasons with Jacksonville, including all 16 last season when he led the Jaguars with six interceptions.
Packers: Driver returned to practice Wednesday, 10 days after his frightening face-first fall. Driver severely sprained his neck when he landed upside down in the Packers' loss to Minnesota on Sept. 7. He was motionless on the field for several minutes while his face mask was removed and he was strapped to a stretcher. Driver spent two days in the hospital, eight days in a neck brace and nine days with pounding, post-concussion headaches. He hopes to play Sunday at Arizona -- he's listed at 50-50.
Chiefs: Priest Holmes was held out of practice Wednesday, sore with what coach Dick Vermeil called "running back's body." Vermeil said Holmes would be "questionable to probable" for Sunday's game at Houston. Nose tackle Tank Reese, a rookie from Kansas State was waived, and linebacker Quinton Caver was activated.
Colts: Defensive end Dwight Freeney is likely to miss Sunday's game against Jacksonville and could miss more time because of a sprained left ankle. Initially, the Colts did not believe the injury was serious. Coach Tony Dungy said after Wednesday's practice, however, that Freeney was "very, very doubtful" for this week's game.
Giants: Left offensive tackle Luke Petitgout practiced Wednesday and should be in the starting lineup against the Redskins on Sunday. Petitgout had not played since having back spasms in the season-opening win over the Rams. Rookie Jeff Roehl started in his place in Monday night's overtime loss to Dallas.
