HIGH SCHOOL PREVIEW | Friday's games

URSULINE (2-2)vs. ROCHESTER (N.Y.) AQUINAS (0-2)
Game time: 5:45 p.m. at StambaughStadium.
Last meeting: First meeting.
Notebook: After starting 0-2, Ursuline has won two straight, beating Lumen Christi (Mich.) last week and Wilmington (Pa.) in week three. The Irish will face their third straight out-of-state team. Daryll Clark has been sensational this season for the Irish, completing 56 of 97 passes for 745 yards and seven touchdowns. Terrell Washington and Alex Allen have combined for over 600 yards rushing. The Aquinas Little Irish, who would be a Div. II team in Ohio, were the New York Class A state champs last season, but lost their standout running back to graduation and are not as strong this year. Ursuline must stop junior running back Mike Sondericker, who ran for 240 yards in Aquinas' 7-6 loss last week to Henninger.
MOONEY (3-1)vs. PAINESVILLE RIVERSIDE (1-3)
Game time: 8:15 p.m. at Stambaugh Stadium.
Last meeting: Mooney won 25-7 lastseason.
Notebook: Mooney may have lost to Warren Harding, but it's hard not to be impressed with how well the Cardinals played. Trailing 21-13, Mooney quarterback Ron Stoops found Jim Berry on an 18-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-19, but Harding's Jonte Stroud knocked down the pass conversion attempt and then recovered an onside kick to seal it. The Cardinals led 13-0 at one point, but did not have enough to beat the nationally-ranked Raiders. Riverside has surrendered an average of 31.5 points per game this season, including a 42-0 loss to Ashtabula Lakeside on Friday. This one could get ugly.
FITCH (3-1) vs. MASSILLON PERRY (2-2)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. at Perry HighStadium.
Last meeting: Fitch won 27-6 in a 1992Div. I regional semifinal.
Notebook: The good news is Fitch rolled up 339 yards rushing in last week's 48-40 win over Canfield. The bad news is the Falcons gave up over 400 yards passing. Standout senior Miles Williams missed most of the game with a strained hamstring. He hopes to be back for Friday's game, but hamstring injuries are notoriously tricky. The Falcons will need Williams if they want to beat Perry, which is always tough at home. The Panthers had just 132 yards on offense in a 13-7 loss to North Canton last week and don't seem to be as powerful as in years past.
SALEM (2-2, 1-0) vs. STRUTHERS (2-2, 0-0)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. at Struthers HighStadium.
Last meeting: Struthers won 37-34 last season. The Wildcats have won six straight over the Quakers.
Notebook: Salem wasn't hitting on all cylinders, but still came away with a huge road win against Alliance on Friday, 15-13. Lance Buckley had 74 yards rushing for the Quakers, who struggled to get their normally potent passing game going. Struthers, meanwhile, lost a heart-breaking triple overtime game to Campbell and has now lost two straight. Wildcats quarterback Tim Zetts had 103 yards passing and three touchdowns. With Poland and Howland playing well, this is a must-win game for both teams in the Metro Athletic Conference race.
CANFIELD (1-3, 0-1) vs. HOWLAND (3-1, 1-0)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. at Richard Lombardo Stadium, Howland.
Last meeting: Howland won 23-21 in a Div. II regonal semifinal. The Cardinals won the regular season meeting 23-8.
Notebook: Howland senior running back Tony Davis, a Penn State recruit, collected 368 all-purpose yards as the Tigers rallied from a 14-10 deficit to beat Poland 24-14 on Friday. Howland also intercepted four passes as the Tigers shut out the Bulldogs over the final three quarters. Despite trailing the entire game against Fitch, Canfield nearly rallied down the stretch with two late touchdown passes by quarterback Jamie McNally, who finished with 421 yards passing. Wideout Jordan Ferns had 284 yards receiving. Canfield has played well at times, but Howland's size and depth may prove to be too much.
SOUTH RANGE (4-0, 1-0) vs. LOWELLVILLE (4-0, 1-0)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. at Lowellville High Stadium.
Last meeting: Lowellville won 26-12 last season. The teams have split their last eight meetings.
Notebook: Lowellville has the area's longest regular season win streak at 16 games, but will need its best game of the season to keep it going. The Rockets gave up their first points of the season last week in a 29-7 win over Mathews after three straight shutouts. South Range needed overtime, but stayed perfect with a 13-7 win over rival Springfield. Ryan Maxwell ran for 106 yards and the game-winning touchdown.
SPRINGFIELD (1-3, 0-1) vs. MINERAL RIDGE (3-1, 1-0)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. at Whittaker Field, Mineral Ridge.
Last meeting: Springfield won 26-7 last season.
Notebook: Mineral Ridge has rebounded from its opening loss with three straight wins and is a bad half away from being undefeated. The Rams will lean on running back Levi Leigh, who had 242 yards rushing and three touchdowns in Ridge's 47-7 win over Western Reserve. Quarterback Chris Ault added 119 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Springfield played well against rival South Range, but failed to gain a first down in overtime before surrendering the game-winning touchdown. Mason McCambridge is a threat to run or throw, combining for 170 yards in the loss.
LIBERTY (3-1, 1-0) vs. HUBBARD (3-1, 0-1)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. at Hubbard HighStadium.
Last meeting: Hubbard won 21-14 in overtime last season.
Notebook: Hubbard lost standout running back Shaun Lane in the second half against Newton Falls, then lost the game. Lane had 123 yards rushing and a touchdown, but is not expected to play against Liberty. That could be a huge blow for the Eagles, who have another tough test this week. Liberty quarterback Brian Jones completed 10 of 12 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns as the Leopards rolled past Champion on Friday. Bradley Fletcher, an Iowa recruit, hauled in an 83-yard touchdown pass in the victory.
