Freshman Lisa Davieshonored by Horizon
YOUNGSTOWN -- Freshman Lisa Davies, a West Branch High graduate, is the Horizon League Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
Davies was just six seconds from breaking the school record in her first collegiate race with a ninth-place time of 22:04 at the 6K course at the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational.
Davies' time was the fastest time run by a freshman in Youngstown State history. Her performance also paced the Penguins to a third place finish at the 13-team meet.
Golf team takes 11th
BOWLING GREEN -- The Youngstown State men's golf team shot the best third-round score of the BGSU John Piper Invitational Tuesday, although the Penguins finished 11th in the 12-team field won by Oakland.
Josh Zarlenga fired a career-low 69 and finished at 224 and tied for 18th place for YSU. Derek Knepper was 32nd with a 234. Ross Beal was 51st with a 236.
Youngstown State returns to action Sept. 22 at the Butler Fall Invitational.

MCDONALD -- Due to weather concerns , McDonald High School's Homecoming football game on Friday against Mathews has been switched to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Boardman HOF
BOARDMAN -- The 24th Boardman Hall of Fame Sports Banquet will be held Oct. 12 at the Georgetown. Tickets for the banquet are $35.00.
The inductees are Bill Collins, baseball, 1956; D. J. Ovilvie, football, 1987; Ted Smith, posthumous football, 1948; Jeff Wilkie, tennis, 1971; Jackie Bak-Yost, swimmer, 1988; Bill Bonte, baseball, 1965; Laurie Gomez-Henes, track and cross country, 1988; Doug George, football, 1980; Roger Patterson contributor, football coach; Jim Fox, contributor, athletic director.
The inductees will introduced when the Boardman High football team hosts North Canton Hoover, Oct. 10.
After 4, the inductees will be introduced at the Lee Greenwood concert in the Performance Arts Center at Boardman High School. Both events will be held Oct. 11.
Mineral Ridge's Millerjudges boxing title
BERLIN, Germany -- Tom Miller of Mineral Ridge was a judge as Felix Sturm of Germany upset champion Hector Velazco of Argentina for the WBO middleweight championship of the world last Saturday.
His next assignment is Sept. 27 in Akron as the U.S. Army team takes on the Ohio champions team.
Mercer holdsAll-Star Circuit
MERCER, Pa. -- Action resumes at Mercer Raceway Park Saturday with the season's only appearance of the All-Star Circuit of Champion Sprint Cars.
The Chuck Marsh Memorial will be highlighted by a 40-lap $5,000 to-win feature race.
Also on the card will be the New Castle School of Trades Sportsman Modifieds and the Butterfield's Pub Stock Cars. The rain date is Sunday.
Martial Arts tourneyset for Stambaugh
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 17th U.S. Martial Arts Championship will be held at Youngstown State University's Stambaugh Stadium gym on Sept. 27.

Columbiana Cometstake fourth place
TOLEDO -- The Columbiana County Comets Special Olympics softball team took fourth place at the state tournament.
Members of the Comets (8-3) are Ron Leupe, Tom Baun, Tom Eddy, Jim Boso, Samantha Morris, Marvin Higgins, Art Rhodes, Eric Crews, John Douds, Shaun Morris, James Gordon, Brent Miller, Larry Jenrett and Joey Morris.
