PEACE RACE Legendary Rodgers will serve as starter

A $3,200 prize money purse is available to American runners.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 29th annual Youngstown Peace Race will be held Oct. 5 in Mill Creek Park.
Bill Rodgers, the 1977 Peace Race Champion and 2002 Grand Masters Champion, will attend the 2003 race.
During his long running career, Rodgers forged his way to becoming one of the world's top distance runners ever and arguably the world's top marathoner ever. Three times he was named the world's top marathoner and is the only person to ever win both the Boston and New York marathons four times each.
Not running
Rodgers will not be able to run in the Peace Race due to a stress fracture. He will, however, be available for an autograph session at Second Sole, 755 Boardman-Canfield Rd. (Ohio Route 224) on Oct. 4 from 2 to 5 p.m.
He will also serve as the race starter and will speak and present awards to runners at the awards ceremony following the race at the Youngstown YMCA.
Runners can register and pick up their packets at Second Sole between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Oct. 3 and Oct. 4.
The Peace Race will consist of a 2-mile fun run/walk that will start near the Youngstown YMCA on Commerce Street at 9:30 a.m., and the feature race, the 10-kilometer race at 10:15 a.m. that travels point-to-point through Mill Creek Park and drops 280 feet in elevation from start to finish. The 10K starts at 10:15 a.m.
A $3,200 prize money purse is available to American runners for the 10-k. Performance incentives are in addition to the prize money.
Day of race registration and packet pick-up will be at the Youngstown YMCA beginning at 7:45 a.m. Entry forms are available at Second Sole or area YMCAs. The entry fee is $15 before race day and $17 on race day. For further information, runners can contact Second Sole at (330) 758-8708 or e-mail race director Ted Rupe at ted.rupe@neomin.org.
