The Tigers need five or more wins in their last 12 games to avoid the post-1900 major league mark, set by the 1962 Mets. Jason Kershner (2-3) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Nate Cornejo (6-16) allowed six runs -- five earned -- and eight hits in 61/3 innings.

Mecir (2-3) started the ninth in his first save situation of the season and gave up a one-out single to Garret Anderson. Mecir then walked Tim Salmon before Spiezio lined a fastball into the seats in right field.

Atlanta was assured of at least the wild-card berth when Los Angeles lost to Arizona. Greg Maddux was denied his 15th win when Atlanta's bullpen failed to hold a 4-1 lead, and Montreal won on Orlando Cabrera's run-scoring double in the 10th off Roberto Hernandez (5-3).
