NORTH LIMA -- The public is invited to attend when Angee Shaker of WYTV News Channel 33 speaks at the Beaver Township Crime Watch meeting, which will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 23 in the activity center of Shepherd of the Valley, 9111 Sharrott Road. Shaker will speak on the channel's Safe Family program. Refreshments will be provided.
Trash and treasure sale
AUSTINTOWN -- The 20/9 Amateur Radio Club will have a trash and treasure sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 5634 Kirk Road. Proceeds will benefit the club's community service activities and will help fund development of a communications trailer that would be used in an emergency or natural disaster.
The 20/9 Amateur Radio Club provides emergency radio communications during severe weather and other emergencies. The club has 103 members throughout the tri-county area.
Misappropriation of funds
PITTSBURGH -- A former Butler woman will spend one month in jail and five months in home detention on her conviction for misappropriation of funds by a bank employee. U.S. District Judge Gustave Diamond imposed the sentence on Sandra L. Holland, 45, who now lives in Louisville, Ky., in U.S. District Court on Tuesday. According to information presented in court, Holland was employed at both Mellon Bank and National City Bank from August 2000 to November 2000. On Aug. 31, 2000, Holland deposited into her personal account at Mellon Bank two United States Treasury checks that were the property of Mellon Bank. The checks came into Holland's possession in connection with her employment at Mellon Bank, prosecutor's said. Holland also embezzled money, totaling $11,025.90, on four occasions between Oct. 16, 2000, and Nov. 14, 2000, while she was employed as a teller at National City Bank. She was ordered to pay restitution of $56,893.38 and have three years' supervised release after serving her jail term.
Pinned by tow motor
CAMPBELL -- A Youngstown man was in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center this morning with injuries suffered when a tow motor he was operating overturned, pinning him underneath.
Thomas Hudson, 55, of Woodcrest Avenue, suffered injuries to both legs and his left hand around 9:40 a.m. Tuesday at 27 Union St., an industrial site owned by Sherman International of Pittsburgh.
The company specializes in steel fabrication and the dismantling of steel mills.
Facing weapons charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- A city man was indicted Wednesday on a federal weapons charge. The U.S. attorney's office for Northern Ohio said Michael Polite, 24, of East Lucius Avenue, was charged with possession of a gun and ammunition after having been convicted of a drug charge. White was found guilty of delivery of a controlled substance in Mercer County, Pa., in 1988. The indictment is part of the ongoing Gun Reduction Interdiction Project.
Warrants issued for 2
STRUTHERS -- Struthers Municipal Court issued warrants for two Smith Township residents wanted in the assault and robbery of an 85-year-old woman in a grocery store parking lot last week. Donald J. Graham, 41, and Gertrude P. Gastaldo, 41, both of Norman Avenue, are each charged with one count of assault and one count of robbery.
According to police, Gastaldo knocked the elderly woman to the ground while wrestling her handbag away from her in the parking lot of Nemenz IGA on Sept. 10. The woman suffered minor injuries in the fall. Graham drove a car alongside the woman, allowing Gastaldo to step out and grab the purse.
Planning to seek office
YOUNGSTOWN -- Atty. Brad Gessner of Austintown officially announced his candidacy today for Mahoning County prosecutor. He will challenge Prosecutor Paul Gains in the March 2004 Democratic primary. He is an assistant Summit County prosecutor, and a former Mahoning County prosecutor under James A. Philomena.
