Warren's Elseris player of week
Warren G. Harding High junior Ben Elser was named Steel Valley Conference player of the week for his performance in the Raiders' 21-19 victory over Cardinal Mooney.
Elser (5-foot-9, 188 pounds), a linebacker, recorded four first hits, five assists, one tackle for loss and two quarterback pressures. He also blocked a field goal.
Blaney wins sprint feature
LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. -- Dale Blaney held off Dean and Kenny Jacobs Saturday night at the Lawrenceburg Speedway to win the Haulmark All Star sprint car 50 lap Hoosier Fall Classic feature.
The 21st annual event paid $12,000 to win to 15th-starting Blaney for his second Lawrenceburg triumph of 2003 in the Fritz Andrews Maxim with George Fisher power.
Drivers in runoffs
LEXINGTON -- Five area drivers will compete in the 40th Valvoline Runoffs at the MidOhio Race Course.
Bill Pintaric, Jr. will be in the GT-4 class. Csaba Bujdoso will be in the A Sedan class.
In the Formula Atlantic class will be Cemal and Ahsen Yelkin while Atahan Koymen will compete in the Formula Atlantic class.
Birnesser is top scorer
COLUMBIANA -- Eric Birnesser of Columbiana High leads all Division III boys soccer players in Ohio with 33 points (22 goals, 11 assists).
He is second in total goals and also second in assists.
Teammate Barry Kimple is tied for fourth in goals (21), tied for third in assists (10) and is third in points (31).
Bocce champs
YOUNGSTOWN -- Pannunzio Construction defeated Allied Locksmith to win the Pacentrano Club League title.
Members of the winning bocce team were John DeFelice, Tom Coppola, Carmen Malvestuto, Mario DiIullo, Nick Gentile, Jerry Leombrunno, Frank DiGiacco and Ivan Franko.
Lakeview's Keyserselected by TAC
Whitney Keyser of Lakeview was named Trumbull Athletic Conference volleyball player of the week.
Keyser, a 5-foot-9 senior outside hitter, had 60 kills, 21 digs, three aces and five blocks for the week.
She was also named to the Akron Hoban Invitational all-tournament team for the second straight year. Lakeview won the tournament.
Marlin Jacksonticketed for alcohol
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan's Marlin Jackson was ticketed for being a minor in possession of alcohol and possessing false identification nearly a month before assaulting a fellow student, court records show.
The incident occurred on May 4. On June 1, Jackson was involved in an altercation with Shahin Farokhrny, a civil engineering student.
Correction
Jeff Casity of Mineral Ridge recently aced the No. 2 hole at Hyde-a-way golf course. His name was misspelled in Sunday's editions.

Report: Brooks fell asleep before crash
MINNEAPOLIS -- A State Patrol investigation determined that former U.S. Olympic hockey coach Herb Brooks fell asleep before his fatal crash on Interstate 35, his son said.
The coach of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" team was returning from northeastern Minnesota on Aug. 11 when his car went off the highway and rolled. He wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle.
The report confirmed that Brooks wasn't drinking, speeding, talking on his cell phone or having a health problem when his minivan drifted off the road.
WUSA shuts down
ATLANTA -- The WUSA shut down operations five days before the Women's World Cup, saying it didn't have enough money to stay in business for a fourth season.
Singh winstournament
SILVIS, Ill. -- Vijay Singh won the rain-delayed John Deere Classic by four strokes, earning his third title of the year. The win moved him to the top of this season's PGA money list.
Singh closed with a 6-under-par 65 for 16-under 268.
