Clarett troubles remind uswhat is wrong with society
EDITOR:
I don't know Maurice Clarett or his family, but he is from Warren, so here are my observations.
He could have had a great career because of his athletic ability. A God-given talent he threw away. I am speaking from a mother's point of view when I think what I would have done if my sons were in Maurice's place.
I would stick by my sons no matter what they might do. However, I wouldn't condone any unethical behavior.
I think that Maurice tried to beat the system and got caught. I don't think that he is the only one to have done this. This doesn't make it OK. We put athletes on a pedestal and give them idol status. The fact that a coach from another school would gladly take him, knowing he has done some shady things, doesn't say much for the coach or the standards that are obviously lacking in our society.
I hate to bring up the "good old days," but in "my day" I was afraid of my parents, teachers, any adult -- anyone who caught me doing anything slightly wrong and told me to quit. I did. Why? Because my parents would "deal" with me. I never came out the winner. There was no room for lying, cheating and stealing.
I can understand Myke Clarett being upset that his son made some mistakes. We all make mistakes. The shame of it all is that Maurice isn't taking his lumps. Admitting his errors would have been better, and we could all respect him for that.
I don't believe that Maurice can blame the fact that he is from a single-parent household or that he is black for this happening to him. There are a lot of single parents who raise good, honest, hard-working people who become law-abiding citizens. I can think of some great athletes who are black and have not had any scandal surrounding their names: i.e, Paul Warfield, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, George Foreman and Jim Brown.
I pray for his sake that Maurice ponders what he did and knows he did wrong. Make restitution and take his punishment like a man. Learn from these mistakes and have a good life.

Avoid computer viruses:Stay away from Window
Editor:
This letter is in response to the "Sobig" virus article in The Vindicator.
For over 10 years it has been commonly known that the non-Windows systems are exempt from the malady. Yet, people rely on those systems in spite of the problems.
We have been Macintosh-based in our company as well as with our personal systems because we've never had to deal with tainted mail of any sort. Just last week, I received several mailings with .pif, as cited in the article. My attempts to open them were refused. Even if I had succeeded, my OS would be unscathed.
A word of advice to the people still using Windows-based products: Buy all of the ongoing add-ons you'll need (and plan on more expenses not mentioned by the salesmen when you bought your computer). When you are ready to purchase a new system, be sure to look into the benefits of the Macintosh, Linux and Unix. Especially for your home computer.

Other schools lost name,so why should East stay?
EDITOR:
This is in response to the article about the new high school being named East High School.
I have nothing against East, but Wilson High and Rayen also lost their schools, so I don't think this is the way to go.
This is a brand-new school, and I think it should have a brand-new name. It could be Youngstown Consolidated High School or Youngstown United High School, or it could be named after someone.
How can the school board pick and choose East High School when two other great high schools also lost their identity?
