WESTERN RESERVE School board action

Western Reserve Board of Education handled these matters Monday:
Set up dates for informational meetings on the school district's proposed new 4-mill, five-year operating levy for emergency expenses to raise $300,000 annually. Superintendent Charles Swindler said the informational meetings will be at the middle school Oct. 6, at the elementary school Oct. 13 and at the high school Oct. 29. The first two will begin at 7 p.m. while the one at the high school will start at 6 p.m. and be followed by a meet-the-candidates night at 7. Swindler said he also plans to have smaller informational meetings in the homes of district residents every night from now until the Nov. 4 election.
Hired Mary Loboy of Struthers as a special-education teacher for the remainder of the school year. She will receive the district's starting salary of $27,595.
Approved district appropriations for the 2003-04 school year in the amount of $7,009,174.
Declared Sept. 9 as a calamity day as high school students were sent home after a power outage. A traffic accident on U.S. Route 224 caused the electricity to fail shortly after the students arrived that morning. As a result, there was no septic or water service at the high school. The district's other two buildings did not close.
