YOUNGSTOWN -- The Greater Youngstown Area Soap Box Derby will have a spaghetti fund-raiser from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 21 at Brownlee Woods Presbyterian Church at East Midlothian Boulevard and Irma Avenue. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for youths age 4 to 12. Children age 3 and under eat free. Takeouts will be available. Tickets can be bought at the door or by calling the derby office at (330) 727-4114.
Sharon Tube fire
SHARON, Pa. -- Fire damaged the women's locker room at Sharon Tube. Firefighters said they were called to the plant at 5:15 p.m. Saturday. The cause was not determined, but the fire does not appear to be suspicious, firefighters said. Lockers and showers were damaged by the smoke and heat, they said. A damage estimate was not available. Sharon Tube is at 134 Mill St.
Store robbers sought
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Police are looking for two men who robbed Sam's Food Mart on Croton Avenue. They said two men wearing stocking caps over their heads and bandannas over their faces came into the market at 10:43 p.m. Friday and demanded money. One man was holding a black semiautomatic handgun, they said. The men ran off with about $200.
School bus violations
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police found 57 violations when they inspected school buses in Lawrence County. Police said the violations included defects in lighting, exhaust systems, steering, brakes and safety equipment. All 57 were repaired as of Sept. 4, police said. In all, 244 buses were inspected.
Crash seriously hurts man
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Police said William F. Metz, 37, of Clarksville Road was seriously injured when the SUV in which he was a passenger ran off Trout Island Road, went down a 25-foot hill, then smashed into a concrete culvert. He was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Sherrie L. Riley, 39, of Parkview Drive, police said. She told authorities they were talking as she drove south on Trout Island around 1:55 p.m. Saturday and missed a curve in the road, running over a guardrail and down the hill. Metz was flown by helicopter to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was listed in critical condition this morning. Police said Riley was treated at a local hospital, but neither Sharon Regional Health System nor UPMC Horizon had a record of her being treated.
Fatal Pymatuning wreck
TRANSFER, Pa. -- Pymatuning Township Police said Eugene White, 22, of Beil Hill Road, Greenville, was killed when his car crossed the center line on Kidds Mill Road and collided head-on with another vehicle.
White's car ran off the road and up an embankment after the crash, throwing him out and pinning him beneath it around 1 a.m. Sunday, police said.
He was pronounced dead by Dr. Charles Zeigler, Mercer County deputy coroner, who said death was caused by injuries to the abdomen and a fractured pelvis.
Police said White was apparently speeding east when his car hit a westbound car driven by Lance Loutzenhiser, 22, of Hill Top Road, Greenville.
Loutzenhiser was flown by helicopter to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was in stable condition this morning.
Passers-by save victim
JAMESTOWN, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said a couple of passers-by saved a Kinsman, Ohio, man's life when they pulled him from beneath the wreckage of his burning SUV. Patrick Bielobocky, 36, was westbound on Pa. Route 58 Friday when his vehicle ran off the road on a curve, hit a utility pole and rolled over several times, throwing him out, police said. The vehicle came to rest atop Bielobocky and then caught fire, police said. Two passers-by pulled him from beneath it, police said. Bielobocky was flown to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was listed in critical condition this morning.
Man faces more charges
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Additional charges have been filed against a man who barricaded himself in his house for eight hours last week. Pennsylvania State Police have charged Frederick R. Brown, 60, of Freemore Lane, Volant, with aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person. They said Brown used a long-handled ax to shatter the passenger-side window of a 51-year-old woman's Ford Explorer before the standoff Tuesday. She was not hurt, police said. He had previously been charged with terroristic threats, simple assault and harassment.
