LEETONIA Arraignment postponed in domestic-violence case

The woman and her 4-year-old son fled the home through a window.
LEETONIA -- An arraignment for a Leetonia man charged with felonious assault and child endangering was postponed after the man was taken to the hospital.
Matt Markum, 60, of Beeson Mill Road was to appear Monday in Columbiana County Municipal Court in Lisbon, but instead was taken to Salem Community Hospital, complaining of chest pains, Leetonia police Chief John Soldano said.
Soldano said Markum's 31-year-old wife and her 4-year-old son arrived at the Leetonia police station about 3:30 a.m. Sunday. The woman said she had been beaten by her husband, and that he fired shots at her and her son as they tried to leave.
She said Markum fired a handgun at her and missed as she sat on the couch. She ran and woke her son and fled out a window of the couple's ranch-style home. As she was attempting to flee, she said, Markum shot into the van from the front porch.
Called for assistance
Soldano said that after the woman told him Markum had numerous guns in the house, he called for the Columbiana County Sheriff's Special Response Team to assist.
Washingtonville Chief J.R. Blakeman, Columbiana County prosecutor's investigators and a Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation agent assisted.
Soldano said that although it was about 10 a.m. when the SRT team brought Markum out of the home, there was not a standoff. He said getting the proper warrants and assembling the SRT team to "do everything right" took several hours.
He said Markum was fully cooperative with police. There was a 9mm handgun with two full clips of ammunition on a table near the bed, he said.
