DETROIT -- The Tigers became the first team in 34 years to lose 110 games in a season as Kansas City got three RBIs from Angel Berroa. Detroit (38-110) has the most losses since the Montreal Expos and San Diego Padres each went 52-110 in 1969. Jimmy Gobble (4-4) allowed both runs and five hits in seven innings for Kansas City.

SEATTLE -- Tim Salmon hit a run-scoring single and Scott Spiezio followed with an RBI double in the eighth inning. Seattle came close to tying it in the ninth, putting a runner on third with one out. But Mike Cameron struck out looking against Troy Percival and Randy Winn popped up.
White Sox 7, Red Sox 2
BOSTON -- Mark Buehrle pitched seven innings and Carlos Lee drove in three runs for Chicago. Buehrle (13-13) had a 2-0 lead before he threw his first pitch, thanks to Roberto Alomar's leadoff double and Lee's 30th homer.
Devil Rays 5, Yankees 2
NEW YORK -- Marlon Anderson's two-out single snapped an eighth-inning tie, and Tampa Bay took advantage of a throwing error by Enrique Wilson and New York's shaky bullpen. Toby Hall added a two-run double as the Devil Rays scored three unearned runs in the eighth to end New York's eight-game winning streak.

TORONTO -- Matt Riley returned to the major leagues after a four-year absence and got his first career win. Riley (1-0) allowed two runs and four hits in five innings, struck out four and walked three. The 24-year-old had not pitched in the major leagues since Sept. 30, 1999.
Athletics 6, Rangers 5
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Eric Chavez drew a bases-loaded walk to cap a three-run seventh as Oakland won its sixth straight. Texas starter Tony Mounce, after giving up two early homers, retired 14 of 15 batters and had a 5-3 lead before Scott Hatteberg and Terrence Long had consecutive singles to start the seventh.

Astros 4, Cardinals 1
HOUSTON -- Tim Redding combined with three relievers on a three-hitter and Craig Biggio drove in three runs as Houston completed a three-game sweep. Redding (9-14) allowed one run and three hits in six innings. Brad Lidge, Octavio Dotel and Billy Wagner each pitched one hitless inning, with Wagner getting his 43rd save.

CHICAGO -- Russell Branyan hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth. Carlos Zambrano (13-10) had allowed only three hits through the first eight innings. Zambrano gave up a leadoff walk to Ray Olmedo, who advanced on a sacrifice and a wild pitch.

MIAMI -- Rob Fick hit a tie-breaking, two-run single with two outs in the ninth. Atlanta trailed 4-3 when Vinny Castilla led off the ninth with a single against Braden Looper (6-4).
Dodgers 5, Padres 2
LOS ANGELES -- Hideo Nomo (16-11) tied a career high with his 16th victory as Los Angeles completed a three-game sweep. Nomo (16-11) allowed two runs and four hits in 52/3 innings. Eric Gagne got four outs for his major league-leading 51st save and record 59th in a row.

PHOENIX -- Randy Johnson (5-8) pitched a one-hitter for his first shutout in exactly one year, tying a season high with 12 strikeouts. Johnson (5-8) allowed just two runners -- on a fourth-inning walk by Garret Atkins and a fifth-inning single by Rene Reyes, who poked a one-out grounder into right on an 0-2 pitch.
Giants 5, Brewers 4, 11 innings
SAN FRANCISCO -- Todd Linden hit a bases-loaded single in the 11th off Leo Estrella (6-3). Jose Cruz Jr. homered and drove in two runs for the Giants. Felix Rodriguez (8-2) escaped a bases-loaded jam by striking out Keith Ginter and Brady Clark with 95 mph fastballs.
Expos 7, Mets 3
MONTREAL -- Vladimir Guerrero hit for the cycle in four straight at-bats, completing it with a two-run homer in the seventh off Dan Wheeler. Guerrero doubled off Tom Glavine (9-13) in the second, singled in the third and hit an RBI triple that put Montreal ahead for good in the fifth.
