SOCCER Three-goal flurry pulls JFK past Harding, 4-1



CHAMPION -- Warren JFK scored three goals in a five-minute span to pull away from Warren Harding, 4-1, in a non-league boys soccer game Saturday at Champion High School.
With the game tied at 1 with 12 minutes left, Ed Hazboun scored to put the Eagles ahead for good.
Kyle Schimley, Sal Coppola and Anthony Olive also tallied for JFK (6-2).
Ursuline 4, Salem 0
SALEM -- Nick Chaney had two goals, Ryan Novotny had one goal and Seung Min Paik had a goal for Ursuline (3-5).
Ryan Novotny had an assist and his older brother, Steve, also had an assist. Chris DePaola added an assist and Gerad Daly had seven saves for the Irish, who had 19 shots on goal.
Champion 3, Poland 0
CHAMPION -- Senior Zach Gumont, junior Chris Palm and senior Mike Harrison had individual goals as unbeaten Champion improved to 8-0. Gumont, junior John Emery and Kreig Brugler, a senior, had the assists for the Golden Flashes, who out-shot the Bulldogs, 13-9.
Liberty 0, Bristol 0
BRISTOLVILLE -- Jeremy Hume had 10 saves for Liberty (1-6-1), while keeper Tim Fike preserved the shutout for Bristol.
Columbiana 7, LaBrae 2
COLUMBIANA -- Eric Birnesser scored four goals and assisted on two more for the Clippers (7-2-1).
Barry Kimple added three goals and three assists while Deric Graft and Jeff Harrold each picked up an assist for Columbiana.
Canton South 4, United 1
HANOVERTON -- Jeremy Gibson scored four goals to lead Canton South (4-4). Ross Converse scored for United (2-6) and Evan Egli had 14 saves.
Girls
WARREN -- After a scoreless first half, junior Alexis Hazboun put Warren JFK on the board first early in the second half before Champion came back with two goals for a 2-1 victory.
Junior Jenna Lee's penalty kick tied the game, 1-1, followed by junior Carlie Dawson's go-ahead goal with 10 minutes remaining for Champion (5-4). Assisting on Carlie Dawson's goal was Beth Dawson.
Fitch 2, Howland 1
HOWLAND -- Dina Harris and Kelly Croysdale each scored a goal for the Falcons (5-1-1). Sarah Vaughn and Harris had an assist apiece.
Sarah Mangiarelli scored the goal for the Tigers (4-2). Kristi Brendlinger, goalie for the Falcons had 22 saves. Howland's Melissa Airhart had nine saves.
West Branch 1, Boardman 0
BELOIT -- Midway through the second half, freshman center midfielder Lisa Bell scored from about 25 yards out for the Warriors (5-0-3).
Badger 1, Lakeview 0
CORTLAND -- Tessa Bonar scored the game's lone goal for Badger, which was out-shot 11-1.
