Soap Box fund-raiser
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Greater Youngstown Area Soap Box Derby will have a spaghetti fund-raiser from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Brownlee Woods Presbyterian Church at East Midlothian Boulevard and Irma Avenue.
The cost is $6 for adults, $3 for age 4 to 12. Children ages 3 and under eat free. Takeouts will be available. Tickets can be bought at the door or by calling (330) 727-4114.
Youngstown shootings
YOUNGSTOWN -- City police were called to Forum Health Northside Hospital about 12:30 p.m. Sunday on a report that a 22-year-old East Side man had been shot.
John Perdue of Stiles Avenue said he was driving a car when he was shot. Hospital personnel said Perdue was not in the hospital this morning.
Also, Trinell Bennett, 30, address not given, was shot in the right shin while standing on South Avenue near Cameron Avenue about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, police reports show. He was taken by a friend to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was treated.
Flood committee meeting
AUSTINTOWN -- The Austintown Flood Committee will have a public meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Wedgewood Park Evangelical Congregational Church, 194 S. Meridian Road.
Trustee Richard E. Edwards and Richard Marsico, Mahoning County engineer, will listen and respond to remarks from the audience. Residents must adhere to a three-minute time limit in delivering their comments and should bring a self-addressed, stamped envelope to be included in a mailing of responses from public officials.
Liberty cleanup day
LIBERTY -- Liberty in Bloom, a community group dedicated to beautifying the township, has designated Oct. 25 as its third beautification and litter cleanup day.
Make a Difference Day is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Volunteers are asked to report to the high school at 9 a.m. to work around the school.
The Northeastern Ohio Community Action Program will pick up litter along main roads, Liberty Business Association will clean Belmont Avenue, and Liberty Student Government and National Honor Society will pick up litter on side streets.
Snacks will be provided by Giant Eagle and Frito Lay.
Man shot at 4 times
YOUNGSTOWN -- A South Side man escaped injury despite being shot at four times as he sat in his 1991 Cadillac about 12:18 a.m. Sunday.
The 33-year-old Hillman Street man told city police that he was driving the car with a 37-year-old female passenger. As he pulled into the woman's West Myrtle Avenue driveway, the woman's son, 21, approached the driver's door and said, "You're not going to disrespect my mother," police reports show.
After further comments, the younger man shot at the driver, hitting the driver's head rest, door and window and the rear driver-side door.
Reports show that the shooter's mother called police as her son said: "Mom, you're going to call the police on me? I did it for you." He then handed her the gun and ran, police reports show.
Drug trafficking charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- A South Side man faces a drug trafficking charge after police found a small plastic bag of suspected marijuana in the glove box of the Pontiac Bonneville he drove and eight individually packaged bags of suspected marijuana, a white pill and $200 hidden beneath a molding between the driver and passenger seats, police reports show. Tyrone J. Chatman, 31, of Hudson Avenue, had been pulled over at 3:45 p.m. Sunday on Evergreen Avenue near Hillman Street after police heard loud noise coming from the car. Besides the drug charge, he was issued a noise citation.
Car chase leads to arrest
AUSTINTOWN -- Police arrested a Deer Creek apartments man Sunday after a chase. Christopher Cook, 23, is charged with fleeing and eluding.
Police said Cook was driving a car that they tried to pull over for a license plate violation about 11 p.m. on state Route 46 near Silica Road. Reports state that after police turned on their lights and sirens, Cook drove to Dunlap Road, got out of his car and ran, but was caught. Cook later told police he ran because he was scared.
