Car stolen, set on fire
CANFIELD -- The car of a man cleaning an office on Boardman-Canfield Road was stolen, driven to Girard and set on fire, police reports show.
The Youngstown man said the car was taken at about 5:15 p.m. Sunday. He had left his 1990 blue Chevy Lumina unlocked with the keys on the driver seat, according to Mahoning County Sheriff's Department reports. Also stolen was the cell phone in the car.
At about 7:40 p.m., Girard police found the vehicle flipped over and engulfed in flames on a slag road along a riverbank near Interstate 80 at state Route 11, Girard police reports show. The Girard Fire Department reported the car was a total loss and extinguished the fire.
Inmate injures deputy
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Mahoning County deputy sheriff suffered a shoulder injury when an inmate in the county jail on Fifth Avenue grabbed the deputy as she served the inmate a dinner tray.
Deputy Christina Kachaylo was serving the tray through a hole in a cell at about 4:40 p.m. Friday when the 47-year-old female inmate inside grabbed the deputy's arm and tried to pull her through the hole, sheriff's department reports show.
The inmate will likely be charged with felony assault on a police officer, said sheriff's Maj. Michael Budd. She has been in the jail since Sept. 2, serving a 30-day sentence for contempt of court, and waiting resolution of theft and disorderly conduct charges, Budd said. The deputy was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
