MADISON, Wis. -- Jamaal Brimmer returned a fumble for a score, set up two touchdowns with his first two career interceptions and had two sacks as UNLV stunned No. 14 Wisconsin 23-5 Saturday.
The Badgers (2-1) lost Heisman hopeful running back Anthony Davis to a sprained ankle on their second series and fell apart behind quarterback Jim Sorgi's shaky performance on a drizzly day at Camp Randall Stadium.
Sorgi was sacked eight times, overthrew eight receivers and had two of the Badgers' five turnovers. Dwayne Smith, who replaced Davis, also fumbled twice.
The Badgers hadn't lost at home with this high of a ranking since 1959, when they were ranked seventh and lost to Illinois 9-6.
UNLV (2-1) won despite having just 187 yards of total offense thanks to Brimmer's two interceptions, which set up touchdown throws of 6 and 8 yards from Kurt Nantkes to Earvin Johnson.
Miami, Ohio 44, Northwestern 14
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Ben Roethlisberger threw for 353 yards and Martin Nance caught pair of touchdown passes for Miami.
Miami (1-1) defeated the Wildcats for the fifth straight time.
The RedHawks held Northwestern (1-2) to 41 yards rushing on 27 carries and outgained the Wildcats 515-314.
Roethlisberger bounced back from a disastrous outing against Iowa when he was picked off four times in a 21-3 loss.
The junior, playing behind a veteran offensive line, was not sacked and was rarely pressured. Roethlisberger finished 28-of-37 with three touchdown passes before being taken out with 12:34 to go and Miami up by 30.
Purdue 16, Wake Forest 10
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Ben Jones kicked three field goals and Purdue held No. 20 Wake Forest to 244 yards, spoiling the Demon Deacons' first game as a ranked team in more than a decade.
Purdue (1-1) controlled the line of scrimmage and the clock all day -- until Anthony Chambers fumbled a punt at his team's 25 with 2:28 left, setting up the Demon Deacons (2-1) for one last chance.
But Wake Forest put itself in a hole with delay-of-game and holding penalties, and then defensive back Stuart Schweigert stopped Chris Barclay on a fourth-and-1 at the 19 with 1:05 remaining.
The Boilermakers fumbled five times, but got four of them back to avoid their first 0-2 start since 1996.
Iowa 40, Iowa St. 21
AMES, Iowa -- No. 23 Iowa scored 10 points off two blocks by Sean Considine and converted two turnovers into field goals.
Nate Kaeding had four field goals in all to help Iowa (3-0) end a five-game losing streak to Iowa State (2-1) and become the Hawkeyes' career scoring leader with 291 points.
Louisiana Tech 20, Michigan St 19
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Luke McCown threw for 436 yards and hit D.J. Curry for an 11-yard touchdown with two seconds remaining.
The Bulldogs (2-1) trailed 19-7 before McCown fired a 4-yard TD pass to Julius Cosby with 1:09 remaining and Dez Abrams recovered a mishandled onside kick at the Louisiana Tech 45.
Six plays later, McCown completed his 35th pass in 61 tries, a scrambling strike to Curry at the right edge of the end zone that rewarded Louisiana Tech with a 497-361 edge in total offense.
Minnesota 42, Ohio 20
ATHENS -- Marion Barber III rushed for 104 yards and four touchdowns in Ohio's first home game against a Big Ten team.
Barber scored on the Golden Gophers' first two possessions and had two more TD runs after the Bobcats (1-2) pulled within 21-14 in the second quarter. Barber has scored eight touchdowns in Minnesota's 3-0 start.
