YOUNGSTOWN -- Lumen Christi coach Herb Brogan didn't come away with a win against Ursuline on Friday, but he did come away impressed.
"Too many athletes and too much team speed," Brogan, whose team traveled from Jackson, Mich., said of Ursuline. "The best team won. Our defense was on the field too long tonight and their defense did what they had to do all night."
The Irish ran for 282 yards and rolled up 411 yards of offense, defeating Lumen 28-14 at YSU's Stambaugh Stadium.
Lumen, which has won three Michigan state titles over the past 10 years, fell to 1-2.
"It was good to get a win," said Irish coach Dan Murphy. "Defensively, it was great the way we tightened up in the second half and our offense gave us great possession time throughout the game.
"We kept the football away from a very good offense."
Clark sparks Irish
Senior quarterback Daryll Clark ran for two touchdowns and added two touchdown passes for the Irish (2-2).
Lumen struck first after Thomas Devine recovered a Clark fumble on Ursuline's 42. Senior quarterback Eric Adamczyk connected with Matt Russell for a 28-yard touchdown to make it 7-0.
Ursuline answered minutes later when Clark found fullback Brad Turnbull for a 24-yard touchdown.
On their next possession, the Irish drove 81 yards on 13 plays, capped by a 12-yard touchdown run by Clark.
Clark, who completed 7 of 14 for 110 yards and two touchdowns, hit his first five passes for 78 yards.
The Titans got the ball back on their own 20 late in the first half. Adamczyk broke off a 53-yard run and hit Bryan Chase for a 21-yard pass to give them a first and goal at the Irish 3. Chase then scored on the next play to tie the game.
Took lead for keeps
Ursuline pulled ahead midway through the third quarter as Clark hit Allen for a 21-yard touchdown pass.
"The play calling and the offensive line, along with Daryll's moves, made all my yardage possible," said Allen, who finished with 13 carries for a career-high 158 yards.
The Irish pulled away with a six-play, 94-yard scoring drive, capped by a 7-yard touchdown run by Clark. Allen had a 64-yard run to key the drive.
"I was ill most of the week and missed some practice time, so my accomplishments and the victory made me very happy," Clark said.
