Amputee returns to play again for San Jose
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- The San Jose State football player whose right leg was partially amputated three years ago will play for the Spartans next week.
Neil Parry has needed 25 operations since his leg was broken during a game against UTEP on Oct. 14, 2000. He returned to practice a month ago wearing a prosthetic leg, and the school cleared him to play in Thursday's home game against Nevada.
"I'm not worried about getting hurt," Parry said Friday. "I'm feeling as good as I felt since the accident. I just want to finish what I started."
Parry made several attempts to return last season but found his prosthesis uncomfortable. He found a new, lighter prosthesis that allows him to run at full speed and have full mobility.
He won a spot on the Spartan's punt-return coverage unit.
"This is not a charity gesture," San Jose State coach Fitz Hill said. "If he can't get the job done, he'll be replaced like anyone else. But I have confidence in him and his desire to play again."
Parry's leg was broken while he was playing on special teams and it was amputated nine days later after serious infections developed.
