CANFIELD -- The Poland High girls soccer team showed a little something extra Wednesday as the Bulldogs pushed past Canfield, 2-0, in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
As expected with any rivalry, the level of play was intense.
Poland senior Krista Ginnetti scored the winning goal just minutes into the second half.
"Canfield is a big rival," Ginnetti said, "so it feels good to win on their field my senior year."
Trailing for the first time in the game, though, Canfield was not ready to give up.
The Cardinals repeatedly pushed and pressured Poland's defense, but could not get the ball into the net. Their aggressiveness allowed Poland to capitalize on an opportunity and seize victory.
"The key to our game was to get the ball to Krista Ginnetti and Britt Davis," Poland coach Jim Sutman said. "We have great senior leadership, as well as experience."
Davis scored Poland's other goal for minutes before the game came to a close.
Poland's goalkeeper, senior Landry Yankle, made four saves, while Canfield's Callie Carrera, a junior, made eight saves.
"Our seniors gave a great effort," Canfield coach Jon Ulicney said, "and our goalkeeper kept us in the game. For being her first full game in goal this season, she did very well."
Similarly matched in the first half, both teams found themselves challenged offensively and defensively. Possession of the ball and control of the field was close to even, resulting in physical play and determination.
Both teams had multiple scoring opportunities, but were unable to make something happen. It was clear that it would all come down to the last 40 minutes of the game.
