PITTSBURGH -- Kids who dress like one of the characters from "The Wizard of Oz" may attend "Sing-A-Long Wizard of Oz" for free. Tickets will be distributed while supplies last at 3:30 p.m. Saturday to children in costume who visit Pittsburgh Zoo. "Sing-A-Long Wizard of Oz" is an interactive event that features the classic film as well as a costume contest and song subtitles. It will be presented six times -- twice daily from Sept. 26 to 28 -- at downtown Byham Theatre.
Gala 2003 fund-raiser
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Broadway veteran Cris Groenendaal and Tony Award nominee Liz Callaway will perform at Gala 2003, the annual fund-raiser for Academy Theatre. Tickets are $20 for a public performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the theater, 275 Chestnut St. A black-tie-optional event will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Groenendaal had the title role in three major productions of "The Phantom of the Opera" in New York, Toronto and the Canadian National Tour. He also has appeared on Broadway in "Sweeney Todd," "Sunday in the Park with George" and the revival of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." Callaway's Tony nomination was for her performance in "Baby." She also played Grizabella in "Cats" for five years.
Youngstown 2010 forum
YOUNGSTOWN -- Live broadcasts of "2010 Moving Ahead: A Forum for Reporting Progress," concerning Youngstown's redevelopment plans, will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday on PBS Channels 45 & amp; 49 and on WYSU-FM Radio 88.5.
The special will include a conversation between leaders of Youngstown and Akron, which also had to overcome industrial decline and revitalize its downtown district. Viewers also will be updated on the progress of the Youngstown 2010 plan.
Participants will be Jay Williams, director of Youngstown Community Development Agency; Hunter Morrison, director of Youngstown State University's Center for Urban and Regional Studies; and Jeffrey Wilhite, deputy director of planning for the City of Akron. Host will be WYTV Channel 33 reporter Gerry Ricciutti.
Portraying Beverly Sills
YOUNGSTOWN -- Make reservations by Friday for "Bubbles: A Visit With Beverly Sills," the third in Damaris Peters Pike's "Women of Note" performance series at Stambaugh Auditorium. The show is Sept. 22. Lunch will be served at 11 a.m., and Pike's show will begin at noon. Pike portrays Sills during the early years of her opera career. Tickets are $20.
