WARREN -- A woman who police say shot and killed an abductor before fleeing through the woods has been charged with voluntary manslaughter.
Lisa Cogar, 37, of Woodland Avenue, told a 911 dispatcher that two men kidnapped her Monday evening when she was walking on Olive Street Northeast. Trumbull County deputies charged her with the felony Tuesday.
Charged with kidnapping is the dead man's friend, Timothy R. Williams, 33, of Main Street, Kinsman, who authorities say left the scene before the shooting.
According to the 911 audiotape, Cogar said one assailant, who deputies say is Brock Engle, told her he was going to kill her.
The woman was taken to Engle's Johnston Township home, and then Engle and Williams drove her to a wooded area off state Route 87 in Kinsman, Sheriff Thomas Altiere said.
After arriving in the wooded area, Williams left, Altiere said.
Cogar told the dispatcher that Engle had a shotgun and planned to kill her. Engle told Cogar that he felt he had nothing to live for and that she was going to die with him, Cogar told the dispatcher.
She said she was able to get the gun from Engle and shoot him.
Altiere said the investigation continues and would not elaborate on why she was charged.
Arraignments
Cogar and Williams' charges were filed in Eastern District Court. They are expected to be arraigned Thursday morning, Altiere said. Both gave statements to detectives and are in the county jail.
"She told us that she was raped, so she was taken to a local hospital and rape kit was done," Altiere said.
Both Cogar and Engle have prior records, the sheriff said.
Cogar served jail time on numerous misdemeanor traffic charges and one charge of drug abuse.
Also, there is an outstanding warrant for her failure to appear in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court, the sheriff said.
Sheriff's department records show Engle served prison time in 1999 and 2001.
He was sent to prison for six months in 1999 after being convicted of a charge of complicity to receiving stolen property.
In 2001, he served 10 months after being convicted on a charge of fleeing and eluding.
