WARREN Caretaker of 3-year-old is indicted in murder
WARREN -- The woman who was caring for 3-year-old Auntavia Atkins when she died of a head injury has been indicted on a murder charge.
Ethel Wilbert-Bethea, 40, of North Bank Street, Cortland, the girl's foster mother, originally had been charged with one count of child endangering.
She pleaded innocent to that charge Sept. 3 in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. She is in the county jail on $1 million bond.
On Friday, a county grand jury also indicted her for murder, felonious assault and two additional counts of endangering children.
What happened
Police were called to Wilbert-Bethea's home about 10:30 a.m. Aug. 29. Officials found Auntavia in serious condition and took her to a local hospital. From there she was taken to Cleveland Metro Health Center.
The girl died Sept. 2. The Trumbull County coroner found burn marks on the girl and evidence she had been beaten.
Her mother, Angel Diggs, placed Auntavia in foster care while she looked for a place to live and a full-time job.
Wilbert-Bethea will be arraigned on the additional charges in Judge W. Wyatt McKay's courtroom at 9 a.m. Monday.
