SOCCER Poland defeats Canfield; Niles shuts out Salem
Mooney defeated Cloverleaf while Fitch tied Copley.
STRUTHERS -- P.J. Booth, Ken Toth and Chris Juchno scored goals Thursday as Poland High defeated Canfield 3-1 in a Metro Athletic Conference boys soccer match.
The game, played at Tri-County Sports Complex, was scoreless at halftime.
Booth scored on a penalty kick with 31:43 remaining to make it 1-0. Toth's shot made it 2-0.
With 19:09 remaining, midfielder Matt Pietro scored for Canfield to narrow the gap to 2-1. Senior Robb Kime got the assist.
Juchno scored off a pass from Shawn O'Halloran.
Poland (5-1, 3-1 MAC) has won four in a row.
Canfield had more shots, 18-10. Poland goalkeeper John Aldon made 12 saves while Canfield's keeper, Karim El Raddaf, finished with 12.
Niles 4, Salem 0
SALEM -- Nathan Mang scored all four goals for Niles (3-4-1, 1-3 MAC) on assists from Mike Green, Andrew Nagy, Jesse Patterson and Kevin Smith.
Niles goalkeeper Joe Harvey made 10 saves.
Salem is 2-5 and 0-3.
Howland 0, Alliance 0
HOWLAND -- The Tigers' Jeff Copp came to the rescue of goalkeeper Zack Roscoe about midway through the second half.
With Roscoe drawn out of the goal while an Alliance shot was on its way in, Copp alertly cleared the shot to preserve the tie.
Roscoe had three saves for the Tigers (5-1-2, 3-0-1 MAC).
Alliance goalkeeper Dan Hisey made seven saves.
Mooney 4, Cloverleaf 2
LODI -- Kiki Willis and Zack Hernan registered two goals each while Christo Frangopoulos contributed three assists as Cardinal Mooney stretched its winning streak to 24 matches over two seasons.
Goalkeeper Jeff Seddon made six saves for Mooney (7-0).
Eric Pipa and Andy Skidmore each had a goal for Cloverleaf (5-3-0), while goalkeeper Ben Nida had four saves.
Austintown Fitch 1, Copley 1
COPLEY -- Ben Weaver's goal on an assist from Brad Hrinko just two minutes into the game enabled Austintown Fitch to take a 1-0 lead.
Bick Myers scored the equalizer for Copley (0-3-1) with five minutes remaining in the game.
Champion 2, Lakeview 0
CHAMPION -- Just 15 seconds into the second half, John Emery scored off an assist from Adam Lantz to break a scoreless deadlock.
Zach Gumont also scored with about six minutes remaining for the Golden Flashes (7-0, 3-0 Trumbull Athletic Conference).
Champion took 13 shots and the Bulldogs had seven shots.
Badger 5, Steubenville 0
STEUBENVILLE -- Kyle Arnold had two goals while Zack Pettitt, Josh Shreves and Eric Klingenmier scored one each to pace Badger.
Klingenmier, Pettitt, Brad Panak and Justin Seraway each had an assist.
Goalkeeper Josh Gilliand had had 11 saves for Badger, which built a 4-0 halftime lead.
Goalkeeper Tom Materniak had 21 saves for Steubenville (1-4).

COLUMBIANA -- Ken Wagenhouser scored three times for the Rebels (6-1-2).
James Frost collected two assists as Crestview led 3-0 at the break.
Heartland Christian 6, South Range 0
COLUMBIANA -- Jordan Uhl scored three goals and had one assist while Blake Kozma had two goals and two assists to lead Heartland Christian (4-2).
Jared Schmeid added one goal and Clayton Johnston had two assists for the winners while goalkeeper Cody Patterson had five saves.
United 7, Canton Timken 0
HANOVERTON -- Austin Dangler had four goals to power United (2-5), while freshman goalkeeper Steve Windle, making his first start, got the shutout by making four saves.
Freshman Travis Bailey added two goals for United while Ross Converse chipped in with one goal and two assists and Marcus Barkley with one goal.
Brick Bolio and Ashley Faust each had an assist.
Timken (0-5) goalkeeper Andrew Hersh had 15 saves.

NEWTON FALLS -- Heather Martin had one goal and two assists to lead Newton Falls (4-4-2, 2-2 TAC-8) to a 3-1 victory over Liberty.
Alexis Sifert and Casee Piquet added one goal apiece and Mary Jo Spletzer had one assist.
The Tigers outshot Liberty, 32-14
Goalkeeper Grace Spletzer made 10 saves for Newton Falls.
Amie Banner had the goal for Liberty (2-5-1, 1-3) while goalkeeper Brianna Hideg made 16 saves.

WARREN -- Jenn Natale had a goal and an assist and Katie Piacquadio the other goal to lead Warren JFK (5-0-2).
Piacquadio's goal was a header on a cross pass from Natale.
JFK goalkeeper Aarika Knepp had one save.
Badger (5-2-1) goalkeeper Elizabeth Smith had 16 saves.
JFK outshot Badger, 18-1.
