Last week: Dolphins lost to Texans 21-20. Jets lost to Redskins 16-13.
Key matchup: Dolphins RB Ricky Williams vs. Jets RB Curtis Martin. Both workhorse backs have had strong performances against their division rivals. Williams rushed for 204 yards in two games against Jets with Dolphins. Since 2000, Williams has rushed for NFL-best 4,167 yards. Martin has TD run in 10 of 15 games against Dolphins. In losses last week, neither back had more than 70 yards, although Williams averaged 4.1 yards per carry.
DETROIT (1-0) at GREEN BAY (0-1)
Time: 1.
Series history: Packers lead 78-62-7. Last meeting: Packers beat Lions 40-14 on Nov. 10, 2002.
Last week: Lions beat Cardinals 42-24. Packers lost to Vikings 30-25.
Key matchup: Packers QB Brett Favre vs. Lions coach Steve Mariucci. In a matchup of teacher vs. former pupil, Mariucci faces Favre for first time as division rival. In 1992, Mariucci's first year as Packers QB coach, Green Bay acquired Favre in trade with Atlanta. They worked together for four years, and Favre would go on to become NFL's only three-time MVP. As head coach of 49ers, Mariucci was 0-5 against Favre, who is coming off sloppy four-INT game last week against Minnesota.
WASHINGTON (1-0) at ATLANTA (1-0)
Time: 1.
Series history: Redskins lead 14-4-1. Last meeting: Falcons beat Redskins 27-20 on Sept. 25, 1994.
Last week: Redskins beat Jets 16-13. Falcons beat Cowboys 27-13.
Key matchup: Falcons QB Doug Johnson vs. Redskins coach Steve Spurrier. Johnson, starting in place of injured Michael Vick, played college ball at Florida under Spurrier. Johnson threw 62 TDs for Gators, third most in school history behind Danny Wuerffel (114) and Shane Matthews (74), both of whom played for Redskins last year in Spurrier's first NFL season. Johnson threw for two TDs and ran for one last week, accounting for as many TDs as Wuerffel did in four starts in 2002.
TENNESSEE (1-0) at INDIANAPOLIS (1-0)
Time: 1.
Radio: WKST-AM (1200).
Series history: Titans lead 10-7. Last meeting: Titans beat Colts 27-17 on Dec. 8, 2002.
Last week: Titans beat Raiders 25-20. Colts beat Browns 9-6.
Key matchup: Titans RB Eddie George vs. Colts' front seven. In three career games against Colts, George has averaged 102.7 yards rushing and scored three TDs. Colts defense has not allowed 100-yard rusher in 13 games, longest current streak in NFL. George was held to 42 yards rushing on 20 carries in Week 1, as Titans found other ways to beat Raiders. Colts didn't allow TD last week against Browns, while Cleveland had seven offensive plays inside Colts' 10-yard line.
BUFFALO (1-0) at JACKSONVILLE (0-1)
Time: 1.
Series history: Tied 2-2. Last meeting: Bills beat Jaguars 13-10 on Oct. 18, 2001.
Last week: Bills beat Patriots 31-0. Jaguars lost to Panthers 24-23.
Key matchup: Bills LB Takeo Spikes vs. Jaguars QB Mark Brunell. In Buffalo debut, Spikes recorded two INTs and three passes-defended as Bills shut out Patriots. Spikes was selected AFC defensive player of week. In loss to Carolina, Brunell was nearly perfect, completing 23 of 27 passes for 272 yards and two TDs without an interception. Brunell was sacked four times last week and will need to keep calm in pocket again when facing Bills' swarming defense.
HOUSTON (1-0) at NEW ORLEANS (0-1)
Time: 1.
Series history: First meeting.
Last week: Texans beat Dolphins 21-20. Saints lost to Seahawks 27-10.
Key matchup: Texas K Kris Brown vs. Saints offense. Brown scored 15 points in Week 1 upset of Dolphins, making five of seven field goals. Saints produced only 10 points in loss to Seahawks. Turnovers led to many of Brown's points, as Houston had plus-3 turnover differential, and never lost ball. Saints' charitable offense gave ball to Seattle four times, and will have cut down on charity to beat Texans.
SEATTLE (1-0) at ARIZONA (0-1)
Time: 4:05.
Series history: Cardinals lead 6-2. Last meeting: Seahawks beat Cardinals 27-6 on Nov. 10, 2002.
Last week: Seahawks beat Saints 27-10. Cardinals lost to Lions 42-24.
Key matchup: Seahawks Marcus Trufant and Ken Lucas vs. Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin. Boldin, a second-round pick, had 10 receptions and 217 yards receiving in first NFL game, most by any player in first game. Also had two TDs. Yards were second-highest total in franchise history. Seahawks gave up 256 yards passing to Saints last week, and inexperienced secondary could be vulnerable to Boldin's speed.
CAROLINA (1-0) at TAMPA BAY (1-0)
Time: 4:05.
TV: WYFX (17/62), WJW (8), WPGH (53).
Series history: Buccaneers lead 4-1. Last meeting: Buccaneers beat Panthers 23-10 on Nov. 17, 2002.
Last week: Panthers beat Jaguars 24-23. Buccaneers beat Eagles 17-0.
Key matchup: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme vs. Bucs DE Simeon Rice. Delhomme came in for ineffective Rodney Peete last week, and threw for 122 yards and three TDs to rally Panthers to win. Tampa Bay's defense will be less accommodating than Jacksonville's. Rice had two sacks last week, and was second in NFL with 15 1/2 sacks in 2002. Bucs are looking for third straight regular-season shutout, having blanked the Eagles last week and Bears in Week 17 last year.
DENVER (1-0) at SAN DIEGO (0-1)
Time: 4:15.
Series history: Broncos lead 47-38-1. Last meeting: Chargers beat Broncos 30-27 in OT on Dec. 1, 2002.
Last week: Broncos beat Bengals 30-10. Chargers lost to Chiefs 27-14.
Key matchup: Broncos RB Clinton Portis vs. Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson. Two of NFL's top backs had very different games in Week 1. Portis rushed for AFC-high 120 yards and two TDs as Broncos ran for league-best 184 yards against Bengals. Tomlinson was held to 34 yards and Chargers recorded 64 yards rushing in loss to Chiefs. Whichever team can establish its feature back early will likely win.
CINCINNATI (0-1) at OAKLAND (0-1)
Time: 4:15.
Series history: Raiders lead 18-7. Last meeting: Raiders beat Bengals 27-10 on Oct. 25, 1998.
Last week: Bengals lost to Broncos 30-10. Raiders lost to Titans 25-20.
Key matchup: Cincinnati secondary vs. Raiders QB Rich Gannon. After winning MVP award in 2002, Gannon got off to fast start in Week 1, completing 24 of 38 passes for 264 yards and two TDs against solid Titans. Bengals preyed upon new Denver QB Jake Plummer, intercepting three passes. Gannon threw only 10 INTs in 2002, but if Bengals can goad him into some bad throws, they might have chance at upset.
NEW ENGLAND (0-1)at PHILADELPHIA (0-1)
Time: 4:15.
TV/radio: WKBN (27), KDKA (2), WOIO (19); WBBW-AM (1240).
Series history: Eagles lead 6-2. Last meeting: Eagles beat Patriots 24-9 on Dec. 19, 2000.
Last week: Patriots lost to Bills 31-0. Eagles lost to Buccaneers 17-0.
Key matchup: Patriots P Ken Walter vs. Eagles P Dirk Johnson. On only two teams not to score a point in Week 1, both punters were busy. Johnson punted seven times (tied for league high) and was only Eagle to put ball in end zone, when one of his kicks went for touchback. Walter punted five times and was more effective, with 41-yard net average compared to Johnson's 31-yard net.
CHICAGO (0-1) at MINNESOTA (1-0)
Time: 8:30.
TV/radio: ESPN, WBBW-AM (1240).
Series history: Vikings lead 45-37-2. Last meeting: Vikings beat Bears 25-7 on Oct. 27, 2002.
Last week: Bears lost to 49ers 49-7. Vikings beat Packers 30-25.
Key matchup: Chicago secondary vs. Vikings WR Randy Moss. Bears defense was porous in Week 1, allowing 49ers nearly 400 yards, including 229 yards and two TDs passing. Moss tore up Packers, catching nine passes for 150 yards and TD. If Bears dedicate too many defenders to covering Moss, Vikings could run with impunity. If they use too few, he'll run wild.
