Lunch and learn
Listing of "Lunch and Learn at the Library" free programs to be held from noon to 1 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County's main library on Wick Avenue, Youngstown. Co-sponsors are Friends of Main Library and Youngstown State University Metro College.
Oct. 14: "The Pipe Dreamers." Sandra Gurvis, author of 10 books and hundreds of magazine articles, will dramatize her novel "The Pipe Dreamers," based on the shootings at Kent State University in May 1970.
Nov. 11: "The Romance of the Canals." George Curl, local historian, will describe how the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal shaped immigration and industrial development in this area.
Dec. 9: The Dana Saxophone Quintet will play a varied sampling of music arranged for brass.
Jan. 13: "The Schoolmaster of the Nation." Richard S. Scarsella, president of the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society of Youngstown, will present an overview on the legacy of William Holmes McGuffey.
Feb. 10: "Diversity Through Dance." Archangel Dance Theater, known for its expressiveness in ballet, tap, jazz and modern dance, will be featured.
March 9: "The First People of Ohio." Donna Wynn of Magic Moccasin will discuss American Indians, past, present and future, through places, names, artifacts and traditional storytelling.
April 13: "The Underground Railroad." Marcelle Wilson will talk about the roles of both blacks and whites in supporting the underground railroad. She'll also look at routes of travel and ingenious ways slaves avoided capture.
