MAHONING COUNTY Grand jury indicts Struthers man in stabbing
Twenty people were indicted.
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 40-year-old Struthers man accused of stabbing his live-in girlfriend in June has been indicted by a Mahoning County grand jury.
Rodney L. Smallwood, of Hawthorne Street, is charged with the attempted murder and felonious assault of Connie J. Malovec. According to police, Smallwood stabbed Malovec 10 times in her chest and back during the early hours of June 19.
Police said Smallwood initially told them he was in Austintown when the attack occurred and that he rushed home after Malovec called him and said she'd been stabbed by an intruder who broke into their home.
Smallwood later admitted stabbing his girlfriend, though it's unclear why he did it, said assistant prosecutor Robert Andrews.
Police found a knife believed to have been used in the attack under a living room chair.
Malovec was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center for her injuries, which she survived.
